FWIW, played in every game last year save one (starting in two.) A lot of that was due to the injuries we saw in the secondary.

What I find of note: The Tide's weakest personnel grouping last season was in our dime. ( @uagrad93 which is the same thing you and I pointed to this time last year: repeatedly.) Brown saw most of his action in the dime package. Simply put, he wasn't versed well enough in our schemes to push Cyrus or Eddie out.

In just the Ole Miss game alone: Treadwell's passing reception for a TD? Blown coverage by Brown. TD that tied game? Blown coverage by Brown. What side of the field were they attacking when they took the lead? Brown, again (though it was a slot guy not the wide out.)

He played a lot last year. But, he was far from being ready.

All that said: last year his performance reminded me a lot of Dre who was also thrown into the fire before he was ready. BUT, look how that turned out in the end...

Treadwell would have abused anyone in our secondary, so I'm not going to blame or harp on Brown on a blown coverage or two against him. Could say the same about Cyrus Jones (I believe it was him) and Kevin White. Considering we lost by six points and it was a rather low scoring game I see it as he must not have been that bad. No, he wasn't perfect, but the experience last year will definitely build his ability and confidence for this year. I personally like true freshmen getting reps so we can utilize these guys in Year 2, cause we're more than likely only getting them for three seasons anyways. Utilize them as true freahmen if they're ready that is. When I see our defensive backs getting scorched, I just didn't see the harm in getting some more playing time for a guy like Brown that had already lost the redshirt.

Would blown coverage combined with poor tackling fit your blame category? He had Treadwell in his arms and lost him. The TD that tied the game wasn't Treadwell.

It's just one game I'm pointing to here. In all aspects of the game he wasn't ready last year to see the field. But, he's most definitely good enough not to keep him off. Schrodinger's cat here. (wonder what the alt code is for the symbol above the letter "o?")

As I recall, Kevin White was covered by Eddie Jackson most of the time.

Honestly, you could say these same things about everyone in our defensive backfield last year. Even Landon Collins got burnt and missed tackles. I'm hoping we can use it as a lesson and step it up this year. Marlon Humphrey is looking a lot bigger and stronger. You hearing anything about him and if he'll see the field a good bit this year?

Getting burnt, missed tackles, and an inability to contend for balls in the air, all point to recognition, reaction and discipline. There are other factors, of course, but with the exception of our lack of height from a few of our key players last year, we match up pretty well against most but the most "beast" receivers. Collins was prone to drift out of position, as did our linebackers I thought last year. If you're having to make up space to get to a defendable ball you're not going to be ready to compete for the ball at the point of reception. The air balls Kevin White pulled in to start the year underscored that, although you could also point out the vast majority of WV's passing yards occurred after we lost containment of the QB. You can only cover for so long. The missed assignments and slow recognition made the aubrun game a game far longer than it should've been. Missed tackles can be a factor of being out of position and having to grab and stretch instead of lay the wood to them. Mark Barron is a great tackler, but he also is great at putting himself in position to tackle.

I look forward to a smarter, more experienced and stronger secondary this year. It's the CB's turn to carry things.

I believe that our secondary will surprise a lot of folks and in a good way I might add! Tony taking his experience from last season, Marlon using the redshirt year to get thicker and stronger, moving Eddie back to a safety, Cyrus back and healthy, having a true secondary coach that doesn't have to worry about calling a defense a la Kirby Smart, or deal with officials, interviews a la CNS.

Anybody see a consequential role for Sylve? In my eyes, at least, he did much to redeem himself in the Barn game from his failings in the WVA game.

Throw in Geno and Maurice Smith, Bradley Sylve, Jabriel Washington, Hootie Jones, with the others I mentioned earlier and we have a ton of kids with experience. Throw in the others that came in Jan and the ones on campus now, I think this bunch will surprise us all.

You make a good point because even if we do have issues it appears we have more than enough options to try and create a balanced formula that can help us win. Obviously all recruits are not hits, but I find it hard to believe with all the blue chip recruits we have back there that we can't find a few that will produce at high levels. Ronnie Harrison is already looking like a ray of light.

@BamaFan334, to me, it is all about the experience factor. I think that to truly learn this system, you have to be thrown in the fire or get your feet wet to see the live action. Having all that talent doesn't hurt, but experience goes a LONG way!
