šŸˆ Today was the swan song of Gene Chizik at AU

How many times has Bobby P beaten Saban again?

How many times has Chizik? Or really anyone in the SEC, for that matter.

As for the 3rd name-- let me preface this by saying I realize this is a pie in the sky type situation and it isn't likely at all to happen. I also hate how what I'm about to say went down but, whatever.

As you guys know there is a rather large faction of boosters lobbying for Petrino and literally offering to help with any buyout necessary. Another, smaller group of boosters have reached out to Gruden's agent due to the suspicion that he would be interested in coaching at Tennessee. He has not at all confirmed any interest in Auburn but his agent is at least willing to listen. This came from a fairly well-placed friend of mine who has always been dead-on. Again, not saying it is happening or that there is even a decent chance. But there is some influence pushing in that direction.

If Mayor's post is any indicator...wow...http://www.aufamily.com/forums/topic/126787-state-of-auburn-athletics-address-by-the-mayor/

By reading that entire thread it seems apart again more divided "family" within the Auburn fan base if they hire BP.

All of my friends and coworkers who are AU alums swear by the Auburn Creed. If that is the case, then how on earth could or would they hire someone like BP with all of his baggage and morally inept character? A man who doesn't even care for his own personal family (see affair)? Affairs aside what about lying to the Arky AD and President? I mean I know they joke around and say that Saban is Satan to them but geez .....hiring someone like BP really would be like selling yourself to the devil just to compete.

Yea, you're spot on right here Duder...it's tough to compare ANYONE in the nation to Sabanfor that matter. Saban and Alabama are just about a perfect match. With that being said, personally, I just don't think that Petrino is a good fit for Auburn...I see him going to a Kentucky or UT type school.

As for Gruden - I could be wrong, but I kinda see that situation being similar to when we(Alabama) were looking for someone to replace Shula and Saban had turned us down...and out next choice (if I remember correctly) was Spurrier. Spurrier listened to us, but only enough to get himself a little raise.

Not saying it couldn't or won't happen. If Gruden does in fact go with the college route, I think you can go ahead and bet that it will be in Knoxville because of his, and more importantly, his wife's background there.

I appreciate your incite on the situation though.

I have several people I know that are what people would call close to the Auburn program. While I haven't talked about football with them much this year—at least me instigating the conversations on that subject—I have spoken with a few over the last two weeks and they've brought the subject up.

Based on what I'm told...

I won't say Petrino won't happen. I will say its chances aren't as good as some believe. There are a few reasons behind my thoughts on this.

One, I'm not convinced Chizik is on his way out and neither are they convinced. Let's assume it does happen...

The reasons, well main reason, is because there is a need and desire to bring in a guy that would install a measure discipline for the team. With Petrino, it's not going to happen.

Secondly, you've got a lot that want to get back to power football. Sure, some want to get back to the spread formation for instant gratification, but let's remember the move in both recruiting and scheme to get back to where it once was. Again, not going to happen with Petrino. Even if there is a move to go back to a spread oriented attack, the first point here is the main one to consider.

I've mentioned it before to you Duder, and while I'm not trying to run this point in...it HAS to be weighed.

Just like Fulmer, Cutcliffe, and the UT administration...just like the same staff members at Okie State...people at Auburn at tired of the schtick that Trooper brings to the table. Again, we are going back to the first point of this post—if discipline is needed/desired, it isn't going to happen with him on the staff.

I'm inclined to believe we'll see staff changes in the assistants—specifically on the offensive side of the ball with the OC and WR coach being dismissed.

One guy I talked with told me he's been getting emails and phone calls looking to drum up support for Petrino. I asked where they were originating from and his response was Raines.
Now, setting all that aside.

When it comes to the field of play, wins and losses, etc.

I would take a weeks vacation, donate that vacation pay to TUF, and personally drive Petrino to Auburn.

Sorry TerryP I was just trying to make a joke. I could not help myself!

I am certainly not in the know on these things, but based on what I've heard, I'm not convinced Chizik is out the door this year anyway. I think in the minds of some, alot can be done by purging the staff (Troopah for example). The "family" and "all-in" is supposed to mean something. Nonetheless, if he does go, then Petrino brings a heckuva lot of baggage. As far as Gruden...as a Raider fan and someone who has followed Gruden's career, I REALLY do NOT see Gruden EVER going to Auburn. First of all, I still see Gruden primarily as an NFL guy, but I think Tennessee is only a remote possibility because of his wife's connections. As far as college goes, he is more of a USC or Notre Dame or possibly Florida type guy (not that those jobs are open or anything, just the type of schools I would see him at), but Auburn?! Uh no.

I think Auburn is going to be faced with a perception reality that really took a stronger hold as a result of the $cam Newton thing; the HC is to some degree expected to be a puppet to Lowder, Dye, and company, and is expected to hold the line and keep his mouth shut while they bring him players, etc. Whether true or not, to a large degree, that's the perception. This is also why I don't think Chizik is necessarily out yet - he does what he's told and holds the line. Who are they going to get that will play by those rules? Isn't that why Bowden and Tubby ultimately fell out of favor? They wouldn't completely acquiesce. Who knows? Time will bear it all out.

:icon_cheers:First off, GO RAIDERS:icon_cheers:!!! Secondly, if Gruden were to ever enter the college football world, it would more than likely be at Tennessee just cause of his history from being an assistant there..I wouldn't count that decision out... Gruden just doesn't fit Auburn IMO, just a feeling, his mentality just doesn't.... Also wouldn't think he would like to be in a place that is always competing against Alabama and Sabam, and have to build it up from scratch too

Damn now I miss Gruden, I want Chucky back in Oakland :dejection:, kick Dennis Allen out

I'd be surprised if he left Oklahoma State... he has very deep ties (17 years as a coach of some type and played QB there). I'd imagine he has a good relationship with their largest donor as well.

On top of that, the Big XII doesn't have a conf championship game and the SEC/Big-XII gearing up for the "Champions Bowl", staying put seems to make more sense. In a way, less pressure and more upside.

He's making ~$4m this year, then goes back down to ~$3m.

I miss Gruden, too. Wish he had gotten him to come back and team up with Reggie McKenzie to build something really special.
