Is it time to throw caution to the wind? Should the basketball team consider themselves desperate? In my opinion yes.

I think it’s time to try something new. What can Anthony Grant and the basketball team lose? Games? Been there. Done that. Goethe said ā€œBe bold and mighty forces will come to your aid.ā€ I think if Anthony Grant and the men’s basketball team was bold, that very thing would happen. The fans would at least realize this coach and this team is trying.

Don’t get me wrong. I’m saying I think they ARE trying. It just doesn’t show. Ah, those pesky results each morning after the game. But sometimes it’s not how you lose, but how you look doing it.

So I’m making a bold suggestion, and I wish there was some way Grant and his team could read this:

  1. We want you to succeed. I speak this from the voice of the fans of the great University of Alabama.
  2. Try something new, something crazy, and we the fans will support your efforts. How about this?
A. Press – It works late in the game. Sure you get beat sometimes. Lots of times it works. It’s fun to watch though, and you know what – it might just work.

B. Fast break – do it on every single play. Drive to the hoop. This team has no consistent inside game so why keep trying to work it inside. When was the last time Alabama successfully executed the ally oop? Passing around the perimeter looking for shots works sometimes, but what has it gotten you? You’re 8-10. What have you got to lose? Take a few sloppy shots. If someone’ s open, shoot the ball and don’t be afraid to miss.

C. Be a team with an identity. Pick one thing and hang your hat on that. Win or lose, commit to something that will give your team a chance to win. Don’t just hope good things happen.

D. Like Nolan Richardson at Arkansas, make the game 40 minutes of hell. Use every player you have on the bench if you must. If your players were good enough to give a scholarship, they’re good enough to play. Be a little crazy if you must, but go all out all the time.

3. Get your head up and don’t mope. Fight. But do it some other way. This way isn’t working, and it’s time for a change.

So why panic now? Let’s face it, if Alabama wins out it would have a compelling case that this team is one to be reckoned with and maybe a tournament selection. But, there’s a good chance the committee would still recognize Alabama as a team with ZERO quality wins. There just aren’t many more quality win opportunities on the schedule. The only chance this team has is to win out.

Whaddaya say, Bama? How ā€˜bout you Anthony Grant? Do you want to coach at the University of Alabama? I hope you do, and the only chance you’ve got is to be bold. Go for broke and if you don’t succeed at least you’ll know, and every Bama fan and decision maker will know, you did everything possible with the players you have as you sit right now. You might not win. Then again, you just might.

Great points! I agree, nothing to lose by trying something, anything to win games. The part I really like is to play uptempo at every chance. The way we shoot the ball after running down the shot clock, I see no reason why we can't get the ball out on the break and look for a quick shoot before the defense can get set. I also agree that we play more players, even if it is for very short periods of time. We all want the team to win. There is no reason Bama cannot be competitive on a yearly basis in basketball.
