šŸ€ This quote by Oats makes me realize how much he's changed the culture here

I remember talking to some friends when Avery and Grant were coaches that our players were not in basketball shape. If you watched how many games Alabama let slip away in the last five-seven minutes, you could definitely tell conditioning was not great. Also a big reason you saw Alabama collapse in February and March and live in the NIT.

Oats immediately changed the way we practiced and put a huge emphasis on the S&C program. It's wild you see him say it was a lighter practice compared to what they did at Buffalo.

Coach Bryant used to beat the shit out of his players (not personally) so they'd be tough enough and have the stamina to stay in the game for all 60 minutes and not be winded halfway through the 3rd quarter.

And Coach Saban had the 4th quarter program.

Conditioning goes a VERY long way in terms of being able to sustain the same level of play from the opening kickoff/tip-off to the final whistle/buzzer.

It helped that Coach Bryant didnā€™t have an indoor practice facility to retreat to. I painfully remember passing the bank at the corner of 10th Street (now Bryant Drive) and Hackberry that had a time and temperature sign. If it was 95 degrees, we knew that the temperature on the astroturf field (where 98% of practice was) would be 20 degrees hotter.

The indoor facility was a lot like practicing or conditioning in Coleman parking lot! That turf was hard as hell!!! Felt just like asphalt!!!
My old HS coach used to condition the piss out of us in the summer and in season. We had a 3, 5 and 10 mile loop he would have us run around the school and neighboring homes. Wind sprints on time by position groups was a favorite of his as well. You couldnā€™t just jog it across the line! He would also throw some hurdles for us to run during the summer as well. One particular day after just completing his ā€œ300m hurdles of deathā€, he told me that I needed to run the hurdles for him on the track team. Told me that I could win state championship with my time. I asked if it was good enough for a scholarship and he said that it wasnā€™t. I then said I would stick to baseball in the Spring since I was being looked at by schools for football and some JUCOs for baseball.

We did the Indian run, hated that thing, especially if you were in the back of the line and had to sprint all the way to the front.
