I have noticed that leaders of a political based organization (or something that requires an emotional attachment from its followers) cannot survive under two conditions.

First, if his own people are apathetic. When his people just do not care and all passion is lost, the leader's time is short. (Oddly enough a leader can survive when his own people are angry at him because passion still exist, which means hope still exist; so the leader has a chance to find something to turn the spark of anger to support. When a spark that was once burning brightly is extinguished, the only thing that can save the leader is an external factor.)

Think our situation with Mark Gottfried.

Second, when his rivals or opponents see nothing but comedy in him. When your opponents are reduced to seeing you as a cartoon and not a threat, it is hard for a leader to rally his own troops.

Interesting point and I'd have to agree that I've seen this in my own personal experience. Whether the leader in question was a teacher or boss at work....yeah....apathy and derision are both surefire ways to kill a leader's potential for motivating followers and influencing their behavior.

I just don't understand the reasoning behind hiring this guy. Had they waited just 4 more weeks, the guy down at Tampa Bay became jobless. I think it was an effort to hire someone before everyone else did. I don't want to say this, but I just see misery this year for UT, maybe a bit better in 2010, and then 2011 will be his undoing. They will be starting all over again. I have to blame Fulmer for some of this, for hanging on so long, and not giving UT a chance to cultivate a better coach in house, or helping with the decision to step aside so more time could be given to find a replacement.

Recruiting is a major, major reason for the timing.

Well, up until the afternoon of his termination, even Gruden himself had no idea he would not be returning to the Bucs next season. No way Tennessee would have known - and what kind of shape would they have found themselves if they had waited and Gruden NOT been fired.

I know Bruce Allen, the GM that was fired that same day - share(d) a little poker group with him and a neighbor who also (still) works in the Buc front office. Less than ten minutes before being told he was to be fired, Allen was on the phone with the San Diego Charges discussing a trade involving LaDanian Thomlinson. Allen had not even finished his notes from the conversation when told the owners needed to see him NOW.

Despite what you might read in Sports Illustrated, new Tennessee football coach Lane Kiffin hasn't contributed to Knoxville's unemployment rate.

"He has not fired anybody," UT athletic director Mike Hamilton said Thursday afternoon. "If he said he has fired somebody, that's not true. I don't know if he said it from a standpoint of making a point that 'We've got to get this right.' But he didn't fire anybody.

"You can't just fire anybody at Tennessee, particularly when you're talking about non-contract employees. There's a process."

Kiffin said in a Sports Illustrated story this week that one person had been fired and others had been "run off."

After returning to Knoxville following the birth of his son last month, Kiffin had arranged for someone to pick him up at the airport, according to the article. His driver was 25 minutes late.

"I came back and within five minutes I'd fired the guy who was in charge of the guy who'd been sent to pick me up," Kiffin said in the story. "Here's the point: We need to win. That's 25 minutes that Nick Saban and Urban Meyer had that I lost because somebody was late picking me up at the airport."

Tiffany Carpenter, UT's director of public relations, said Kiffin had a change of heart about the firing.

"The (Sports Illustrated) interview happened the day of the incident," Carpenter said. "At that time, (Kiffin) wanted to fire that individual but after further thought and discussions decided that was not in the best interest of Tennessee."

Attempts to reach Kiffin were unsuccessful.

Hamilton said he knew Kiffin was upset after he arrived at the airport.

"He was ready to go to work and there wasn't anybody to pick him up," Hamilton said.

"I think that he's trying to set the tone for the kind of program he wants to run. I'm very much OK with him letting folks know that he's going to run a very disciplined program and there will be high expectations in terms of those who work in the football program, and letting the fans know that (Kiffin and his staff) are coming to work every day and giving their all to the job."

Based on the Sports Illustrated article, Kiffin wasn't pleased with the work ethic of the support staff he inherited from Phillip Fulmer.

"You can't count the number of people we've run off because they couldn't keep up, and I'm including secretaries," Kiffin said in the story. "They had to go because they weren't going to make it, and they knew it."

Although no secretaries were fired, two secretaries have left the football office, according to Hamilton. He said one secretary retired, and another was reassigned.

Mary Jo Fox, who was the administrative services assistant to Fulmer, has been reassigned. Hamilton said she will serve as Fulmer's secretary in his office in Stokely Athletic Center.

Fulmer requested the office space a couple of weeks ago after being promised the privilege by Hamilton when Fulmer was forced to resign. Fulmer is not employed by the UT Athletic Department.

Even though this story shows how much more of a douche Kiffin is, I'm more interested in Fulmer.

What does he need office space and a secretary for at TN if he's unemployed?

"Megalomania is a historical term for behavior characterized by delusional fantasies of wealth, power, genius, or omnipotence — often generally termed as delusions of grandeur or grandiose delusions."

Let's see, this guy thinks he is a recruiting genius and thinks he has the power to fire any athletic dept employees he doesnt like yet his own boss says its BS.

I think he may have a touch of the crazy....

In my expert and all knowing analysis, I think 'Rural' Kiffin has more of a 'full body hug' than a mere 'touch' of the crazies.

You would think that to run a disciplined program, it would have to start from the top.

Yeah, when I think of discipline, I think of Little Lane, Coach Mongo reeking of alcohol and putting fans in head locks, and Lance "The Lover" Thompson. Yeah, it's all about self discipline in Knoxville these days.

Are you sure someone is not taping a reality show in Knoxville? This stuff gets more bizarre everyday.

Now add the subplot about Fulmer setting up an office on campus and no tellings where this story will end up.

I'm beginning to wonder if Monte K. used little Lame as a tackling dummy one too many times.

What makes you think any of this qualifies as 'reality.' This is 'Bazaro World' stuff that even Larry David and Jerry Seinfield could not dream up.

I honestly cannot figure any of it out myself.

"Here's the point: We need to win. That's 25 minutes that Nick Saban and Urban Meyer had that I lost because somebody was late picking me up at the airport."
So he is already on CNS and CUM level of recruiting. Shouldn't the comment go something like this...

"That's 25 minutes that Nick Saban and Urban Meyer had that I lost because somebody was late picking me up at the airport. And 25 minutes that they have with a recruit equals 7 years in Kiffin World time."
In the background the faintest "Yaw Yaw Yaw Foobol..." Can be heard.

This is not a good coaching staff. They are all narcissistic, mentally challenged adults coaching football. Good recruiters yes, but when you are selling UT and this idiot as a head coach I feel as safe as Ive ever been.

This guy actually believes he is comparable to a coach with a NC and credentials. I'm gonna sit back and watch the Vol Nation implode.

Maybe in its earliest conception, "reality show" represented "reality," but the genre has moved far from those fringes.

Seriously, im cleaning up the coke i just spewed. Coach mongO, that is awesome!

Why is it the UT coaching staff reminds me of these guys?

Farve=Coach O?

Some of the crap he is doing is almost hard to believe. It's just so dang weird.....I mean.......

*sigh*

Forget it. It would be easy to make fun of him. I just hope we own him and UT on a regular basis.

The latest thing I have heard is that Lame Kitten mentioned recruit Bryce Brown on the radio by name. He is a 2009 recruit, but not committed, so UT does not have a letter of intent.

Isn't it still illegal to mention recruits by name after NSD if they remain uncommitted?
