šŸˆ They say you learn something new everyday, right? OK, define this from player weigh-ins at SR. Bowl

The first thing on player itineraries Monday was the annual Senior Bowl weigh-in.
A year ago, Alabama nose guard Terrence Cody drew an audible gasp from the room with a weigh-in of 370 pounds, then proceeded to dominate the competition on the field and show scouts that he could handle the weight.
There was no such attraction this year as the heaviest player was Baylor’s Phil Taylor at 337 pounds. Here were the measurements for Alabama’s three participants:

OL James Carpenter — 6-foot-4.6 inches, 313 pounds, 101⁄8 hand measurement, wingspan 813⁄8.
TE Preston Dial — 6-foot-2.1 inches, 238 pounds, 101⁄8 hand measurement, 765⁄8 wingspan.
QB Greg McElroy — 6-foot-1.6 inches, 222 pounds, 93⁄8 hand measurement, 744⁄8 wingspan.

How is "hand measurement" defined?

How is "hand measurement" defined?

Base of the hand - where the hand begins and the wrist ends, usually there is a line there - to the top of the middle finger.

This is somewhat qualitative in that different scouts take the measurements at the Senior Bowl, Shrine Game, and combines so it's not uncommon to see variation in any of the measurables.

Foshman, you may be mistaken on the location of the measurement. Just taking a look at my own hand and I am the same size as McElroy. From the base of the hand to the tip of my middle finger is only 8", while spreading my hand out and measuring from pinky tip to thumb tip is 9 7/8". I believe they are looking at the width and not length.

The measurement is not from palm base to tip of middle finger. It is a hand span, from the tip of the pinky to the tip of a thumb on an outstretched hand.

Mine is 878 thats 8" and 7/8 ths.

I could be wrong, from my memory of how they did the weigh in's at the last Senior Bowl I was at it was base of the hand to finger, but that was like 7 years ago so I will defer to you if you are certain.

As for comparing you to McElroy, hands are fairly variable. I'm 6'1 and I have noticeably smaller hands than a buddy of mine who played at IU who is 5'10". Coaches at the college and pro level use that as a major litmus test for prospects.
