Anyone got it? @planomateo Did you tell me you were trying it out a few months ago?

@Tidestalker You asked about this when we were talking about it several days ago.

In case the question every comes up again ... I didn't know this until looking through Infante's site.

Graduate Transfer Are Not Free Agency

  • Like all other transfers, graduate transfers need permission to contact another institution. If a coach denies permission to contact and it is upheld on appeal, the athlete cannot accept an athletic scholarship at a potential transfer destination.

But let’s say an athlete is both willing to transfer without being recruited by the next institution and is willing to walk-on. They still cannot play immediately without the support of their previous institution under either the graduate transfer exception or graduate transfer waiver."

Vernon Adams of Oregon fame failed a math class and spent the entire summer trying to get to Eugene. Kinda felt like E Washington was hoping he saw the error of his way. Barely made it. I hope Alabama keeps checking his temperature now and again.

bet ya money he doesn't want kirby to get him
I don't see that. It doesn't pass my "logic test." What's a transferring DB supposed to do to help UGA IF Bama ends up meeting them in ATL that the former DC wouldn't know? I'm not saying that isn't the case, it just doesn't "click."

As of two weeks or so ago word had it Miami was the team to beat.

Mo Smith must have not done things the right way if Saban is making this an issue.

That's one possibility. Another to consider is he's been restricted from transferring to USC. That would make a ton of sense to me considering they are the opening game.

It's strange. I know he hasn't been working out with the team in several weeks but he's been attending classes at UA. Secondly, after learning he's on track to graduate in early August, it seems he's going to miss some of fall camp if he still decides to move on.

Just ... weird.

I remember after Chad Lindsay, quit the OSU team when he did the Grad Trans thing a few years back. He indicated the OSU coaching staff were all about the Bama playbook and what could he do to help then if they faced Bama that year. Chad was not enthusiastic about their approach (believe he thought they were bringing him in to be the starting center)
I would support denying Mo entry to SEC teams and any team Bama is going to face in the next two years (yes, know that he only has 1 year to play)

I was talking with a South Carolina beat writer last night and he mentioned the SEC rule that restricts transfers (grad or not) to other SEC schools. When it comes to UGA, this may revolve around the way the by-law is written: Mo would have to sit a year.

HOOVER — Whether senior defensive back Maurice Smith transfers from Alabama could come down to a longstanding SEC policy restricting inter-conference movement.

Addressing the media for the first time since reports surfaced last month that Smith had requested a release from his scholarship and was seeking to transfer, coach Nick Saban explained the team’s stance, while at the same time making it clear Smith still had a place with the Tide if he changed his mind.

“Maurice Smith has been a good player on our team. He’s a good person, and he would be a significant contributor to our team this year if he decided to stay at Alabama,” Saban said Wednesday during Alabama’s day at SEC Media Days at the Wynfrey Hotel. "And we have told him because we support the SEC rule, it would not be in your best interest to have to sit out. If you want to go someplace else (out of the SEC), we’d be glad to help you do that if you don’t want to continue to be a part of our program.”
Alabama Notes: Transfer of Alabama DB Smith inhibited by SEC bylaw

Kirby...

Don't forget him saying this months ago.

“I wanted to set the precedent for the future that kids would not be able to go to Miami right away,” Smart said. “It’s very important that we understand that, and that’s pretty much standard operating procedure when a coach leaves one place, that a kid can’t go there with the coach. That’s important to me that people understand that.”

Interesting point made by mom... If it was about the SEC issue, Chris Black wouldn't be at Mizzu. I can see why she's not happy about Saban misleading the media on this topic.

Different situations. Black already graduated, Smith hasn't, but my understanding is he's trying to get a waiver to be treated as a graduate student, which we're not granting. Keep in mind, there is more to the story within Alabama and there is a reason that this story is out there from a UGA perspective (more precisely an anti-Alabama perspective)

According to the link he graduates Saturday and all he needs is the same release Chris Black got.

Alabama begins practice on Thursday. Georgia began practice on Monday. Smith is due to graduate on Saturday. As a graduate student, Smith would be eligible to play immediately, but must receive a release from the former school.

Bottom line is Saban allowed Chris Black to do it and isn't allowing Smith to (yet). Rarely does a rotation player leave at Alabama so IMO it appears to be a mistrust or misunderstanding between he and the coaching staff.

I like the SEC bylaw on transferring back into the SEC. Every player that graduates early and the least bit dissatisfied would be off to the races. But apparently, with the Black transfer, the one-year restriction can be lifted. I can see Saban exercising the mercy rule in the SEC for some situations. Black wasn't getting playing time, seemed injury prone somewhat and had already redshirted at Bama. But perhaps the Black exception is why Smith is so determined to get to Georgia?

Not buying this...

It’s safe to assume that Maurice Smith did not envision his plans of transferring from the University of Alabama to go this poorly.

Smith, a senior defensive back that appeared in 22 games for the Crimson Tide over the last three seasons, told coach Nick Saban of his plans to leave the program in hopes of more playing time back in June before making it public. And if weren’t suiting up for college football’s Goliath, it probably would have been an easy process — much smoother than it’s gone to this point, at least.

Since his announcement, reports have indicated that Alabama has been uncooperative with Smith’s desires all the way through, even recently blocking his attempt to transfer to Georgia — where he would join former Tide defensive coordinator, Kirby Smart. But apparently that’s not even the worst of it.

According to a report from DawgNation.com, Smith was “ostracized” by his superiors and teammates after he informed the team of his decision to leave. Smith wrote to Alabama’s appeal committee on July 1, which was provided to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution on Wednesday by Smith’s mother, Samyra:

“On Friday, June 17, I arrived at the athletic facility locker room to find my locker cleaned out and all of my personal belongings in the trash (photo attached) underneath trash,” Smith wrote. “These personal items included my family photos, written goals, inspirational and sentimental items memorializing my deceased former friend, roommate and teammate, Altee Tenpenny, and items of personal value from my former teammates.”

The letter says that the madness began on June 13, when Smith initially requested a “permission to contact” from Alabama’s compliance department.

“I was immediately contacted by UA coaching assistants and advised I would no longer be able to “work-out” with the team.”

Four days later, Saban met with Smith and told him he didn’t need a “formal document” to speak with other schools. Smith insisted on one, according to the letter, and then Saban told him he would not release him to any SEC schools. Smith then received a “permission to contact” form.

Not long after, an unidentified Alabama staffer told Smith that he could no longer work out at the athletic facility. Another staff member later told him he was no longer allowed at the athletic facility “to workout, to eat, or anything.”

“Although I had done nothing wrong, I basically was ostracized from the team and felt I was being forced to make a decision to transfer.”

Smith is set to graduate from Alabama this Saturday. In his letter, he finished with one final message:

“Please do not punish my success and instead reward the efforts of discipline, and determination that UA requires in all of their student-athletes to succeed.”

It does not seem like this is a story that will be going away anytime soon.
