"Commit while you've got a spot" is a piece of advice a lot of prep kids need to pay heed to this season (and in the coming ones as well.)

The early signing period for '22 starts December 21st. However, kids who are wanting a spot for the '23 class may need to commit by December 4th IF they want to be assured of a spot.

Why? December 5th is the day the transfer portal opens. I can see a lot of coaches choosing experience and maturity over a two to three year development plan for this year's senior classes.

I equate HS recruiting as an entry level, new hire. You bring them in and develop them, and they naturally take on the perspective and culture of the company. Getting a few portal guys is akin to grabbing a few experienced outside hires. They have the skillsets to more quickly address immediate needs, but you have to make sure that they either possess the work ethic and selfless team approach that you've tried to instill in the guys you've had since HS or you make sure they have the capacity to get there, quickly.

Bringing in a wholesale number of portal guys is like making an acquisition or a lift-out of another company's line of business. There is an influx of talent and capabilities, but there is a dilution of the company's culture, shared experiences and values. You have to make sure the new arrivals either share core values or have the capacity to get there. It has to move quickly or factions form and divisions become permanent.

Not a bad way to put it. Everybody knows the choice between a kid with a fresh degree and someone employed somewhere else who isn't happy can be tough.
