Short story, then the link.

Thursday night, hearing the color analyst on ESPN talk about Ole Miss and this being the highest ranking they had since 1970 added to the reason I did this research.

Seeing Florida struggle against UT had its part. Then, when I read an article yesterday about the "SI Jinx," I was gone. I wanted to see which teams in the SEC had a preseason rank of #1, and what happened to those teams in those years.

Ironically enough, as I was putting together the piece and listing what happened to each team in the year they started at number one, a common denominator did emerge.

An Auburn fan decided to jump in and proclaim, "The most interesting thing about this article is that the common denominator between all these teams is that they all lost to Bama. Wonder if that had anything to do with them being chosen for the article."

I would say I was shocked. But, then as soon as I said that I'd have to come right back and say I was lying, no I'm not.

Anyway, enough of that small rant to start a Saturday...

Looking back, here's a quick recap of the three teams I considered to be "The SEC's Worst Preseason #1 Teams."

Well what comes to my mind doesn't include an entire season nor preseason #1 but was a terrible way for a preseason #2 to open against an unranked opponent:

September 8, 1975. :frown:

I was there to witness it and to also have a vehicle broken into while parked near Legion Field that unlucky evening.

I posted that last night, and it sort of shocked me I had so many Auburn fans getting riled up this morning.

Honestly, I could not figure out why.

So, I started searching for where the article might be linked. I PROMISE you, I had no influence on where it was posted. None.

But, here it is Saturday, a day of football, and lo and behold look where the online producer for AL.com decided to place the article.

Aubrun fans sure seem to think we are overrated and that they belong in the top ten( this from a group standing outside as I waited to pick up my son from school, which is full of Aubrun homers). Took everything I had to bite my lip.

Terry great write up and read. You like to push the knife in slowly don't you.

Inadvertent Rick. I did mean for them to get so upset.

Hell, until I started researching Ole Miss' '64 season, I didn't realize Bama was in all three. I didn't remember, off the top of my head, we had beaten Auburn in the last game of '84.

It just worked out the way it did.

Can say I'm terribly upset about it though...

1984 was celebrated among Bama fans as the "wrong way Bo" game. Auburn was near our goal line and on 4th down called for an option play with Brent Fulwood to take the pitch. For whatever reason Bo broke in the opposite direction on the play, as if he was to be tha ball carrier, making the play short a blocker. We made the tackle and held on for the win. The loss kept Auburn from going to the Sugar Bowl

Great bumper sticker after the game.

"No sugar tonight. Just a Bo jpb."
