Despite the tropical appeal, Hawaii is a difficult place to coach (in other words, finding a coach is tough). Funding is minimum. Travel is difficult.

It will be harder once they run off all the players and have no choice but replace him. If the rumors are true, things are going to get horrible out there.

I don't think it ridiculous to assume Hawaii knew what they were getting when they hired him. His history isn't/wasn't a secret.

He's a version of Rodney Garner; always moving around in the background but seldom the face of one.
He's a version of Auburn: exploring new coaching staffs while working with another.
He's a version of Petrino: skipping out on contracts and players.

But, look at some of the people who have come up under his direction: Malzahn, Morris, Napier, Applewhite, Spavital, Norvell, Lindsey...that's about half of the guys you know of that are in his "coaching tree."

Look at his resume. He's a version of Kiffin; you don't see him falling backwards.

A few years ago it was a case that was similar to Lowder and Auburn. There were strong athletic/football influences on the Board of Regents.

Now, it's a lot like what we've seen at other schools including our own: academic vs athletics. The "upper campus," as they call it, has hurt the athletic side in a "Sorenson type" fashion.

I think some guys egos have gotten inflated and they desire constant stroking and for people to continue telling them how great they are and how much they are needed. Whether from the current team or another. The portal gives them that opportunity for more ego stroking. Just my opinion…
