I suppose that in this era of image and marketing, a mascot is helpful. So I guess something will emerge. Frankly, if Johnny Reb was offensive, keeping the name "the Rebels" must stupid and offensive.

If you remember a couple years ago they called themselves the Land Sharks on defense, made the little fin symbol on there helmet when they made big plays.

Nothing says Rebels like Col. Reb.
Of the 3 remaining....the Black Bear seems to be the best IMO. There is a native population there in the state.

Americans Blue. dark blue is thier school color....it fits.
Looking @ the NE Patriots ....ole miss has the same colors...i think it's a good fit.

Take the bear option. It can be spun to mean something to them. Have a guy and girl version and name the girl Hotty and the guy Toddy. Ole Miss has produced more Ms Americas than any other school, so Hotty works. Todd is a guys name, so his name is not too big of a stretch.

Bit watch it turn out to be a Land Shark named Robert E. Lee.

The Colonel Reb image is not offensive. While it is possible that the "rebel" name within the context of civil war history could be portrayed as offensive today, consider:

Eastern KY University Colonels of the OVC:



Dixie Heights Colonels (Kentucky AAAAA High School)



Consider also the cartoonish marketing image of "Colonel Sanders"




In light of these images, Ole Miss' doing away with Col Reb is pathetic. If EKU can be called "The Colonels" and have a Colonel Mascot, why is it that Ole Miss cannot be the "Rebels" and have a similar Colonel mascot?

Honestly, that is an outstanding idea. Hey, and you know what? Even a number of offended peoples ...you know...like black people, were those Rebels.

The whole thing is an excersise in just how rediculous our society has become, but if they're going to do it, might as well be this IMHO.
