🏈 The Golden Age of Alabama Football.....v. 2.0

a good friend of mine (who's a few years older than me but we won't say how many) talks about the golden age of Alabama football. now, this golden age started in 1958. he talks about how it felt after Coach Bryant won his first national championship. he talks about how it felt year after year after year after year of winning and dominating and how it made you, as a fan, feel unbeatable, too.

i was alive for a short part of those years. i was there at the end of that era and i was there during the down years. i was there when it looked we'd found "Bear 2.0" in Coach Stallings. he played for Bear. he coached for Bear. he BEAT Bear. he knew what it took to win. and he did. sadly, the romance was short-lived. there was some success after; but not much. there was an sec championship won, but we never really threatened for the national championship.

then.....it happened.

Mal Moore took a trip to south florida on a "do-or-die" mission to bring who he thought was the best man to resurrect our beloved program back from the brink of disaster and put it on a path to winning. and he did just that. he did what everyone said he couldn't do. and i will forever be thankful for that.

and that brings me back to my friend. each time we've won the national championship under Coach Saban, he's told me this is what it was like with Coach Bryant. that this feeling is what it was like back then. he talks about how this is like another golden age of Alabama football and that we should cherish each and every one of these trophies. and he is right. this game is an ebb and flow. we won't always be on top, but we won't always be on the bottom, either. we will rise, and we will fall. and i will be there for each one as long as i am able. up or down, win or lose, high or low....this is my team. and i will certainly cherish this Golden Age of Alabama Football v. 2.0 for all it's worth.

We are in the platinum age now brother.
No disrespect to Bear, God rest his soul.

But I feel that what Saban has done with scholarship limitations and much more parity than ever before, and especially with the constant rule changes, that Saban has now surpassed Bear. Maybe not in total wins yet, but from a program perspective, and in the compressed time table from their 1st championship (factoring out his 2 pro years... 12 seasons as a college coach vs 21 for bear, so in nearly half the time.) to get 6 championships. Nothing short of remarkable. If he averages 11 wins a year, he can beat Bear's overall wins record in under 10 seasons. Time will tell if he stays that much longer or not.

Saban's win % is currently 77.6
Bear's overall was 76

Nearly a push in W%

This is not to disparage Bear or the older fans that grew up in his era.

The 2 greatest coaches to ever coach the game we love have both been here at Alabama.

BUT In my book, Saban has done as much with less. He gets 1 more, and he will have done more with less.

I wasn't alive during Bear's run, but I think he did more with less @Sgt. Lincoln Osiris . Sure, he had more scholarships, but he didn't have the coaching staff, money, nutrition, medical team, or the assets Saban has. Bear won with a bunch of tough badasses that wrapped their shit up and ran back on the field. Today you can tear an ACL and be back in eight months, not lost forever. Let's not even get into the recruiting advantage coaches have today.

Once again, not taking sides here, because I wasn't even alive for one, but the whole scholarship comment amounts to about 10% of the story here. Let's not forget Bear was AD too with many more responsibilities. The game overall has changed, but I still think Bear did more with less.

yeah....i wasn't trying to start a comparison between the two best coaches to ever coach the game. i was just commenting on what my friend said about how good it is, for us as Bama fans, to have this happening a second time in the history of our beloved school.

I grew up ...kid to adulthood ....in the BEAR era....
i grew old....aged anyway...lol...in the Saban era....
met both...went to many many games ....
And i think...BEAR is the legend...great coach....but just legendary in every aspect....his growl..his status..his looks...his leaning against the goalpost..his camel cigarettes...his tv show....his history of growing up...rassling abear..everything about BEAR....and everybody..most.. loved the BEAR...even opponents... and like
Babe Ruth is the baseball legend...even though he isnt the homerun king...anymore..still the baseball legend...
BEAR is the college football legend...even though he is not the greatest CF HC anymore.. and...now the torch is passed to NS... and
Nick is the greatest college footballcoach of all time..period...( had a hard time with that..somewhat)
What he has done...and its not over... more and more..opponents are starting to admire NS...respect his way of doing things...his accomplishments...clean program..
We as Bama fans.....how lucky can a fan base be..and a lot has to do with the fans...their love of Bama football (Kentucky can say same about their basketball program)...the support..good times and bad...

Your comments brought up an interesting comparison and that is probably how it's going to start and end for Bama fans who are more emotionally invested in the historical narrative of Alabama football. Babe Ruth is maybe the perfect comparison. A bigger than life person who set the bar for all the others to measure themselves. For all his hits, home runs, pitching exploits, legendary stories, world championships, and bigger than life personality, Babe Ruth isn't going to be bested by Roger Maris, or Mark McGuire, or Barry Bonds because of their numerical contributions to the game. He's THE Babe Ruth and his bigger than life persona will never be duplicated by another one.

Coach Bryant is that person at the University of Alabama and certainly college football. From the great stories of his life around the depression in Arkansas to "rasslin" bears to playing at Bama on a broken leg, he came home because "mama called." As HC, he had to play the game as it was and would always be, a beauty contest that had dang near zero interest in getting the 2 best teams together. He fought racism in the deep south on his terms, with his team, and was the only bright spot in a state that looked bad, and I mean bad, in the 60's of race relations. Chased Amos Alonzo Stagg, till he caught him, and all the time his teams would play with class and humility and no matter what players would come and go, it never changed. The players refected coach Bryant with every inflection of his voice and incredible standard of excellence. They believed they were better than their opponent because coach Bryant said so and they would run through a brick wall for him.

He is every bit the legendary figure of Babe Ruth here in the south and there is no arbitrary number anyone can put alongside Coach Paul "Bear" Bryant to tell the rest of us that was there, he's been "bested." Not that man, ever. What a ridiculous statement.

It is definitely a great time to be a UA fan or alumnus. I was born in ‘70, so I caught the back end of Coach Bryant’s run. As an 8-9 year old boy, I thought Alabama was supposed to win them all and my world with come crashing down with each loss. In HS, it seemed we were destined for 2-3 losses a year.
The run that Coach Saban is currently on is amazing, considering the parity due to scholarship reductions. I consider both to have their faces on a coaches Mt. Rushmore!!

That's perfectly stated. Saban is the better coach by accomplishment, but Bear's legend will never be surpassed.
