Here's the reason home-and-home series are going away. Making $5 million with minimal expenses sure beats paying a school to come play, paying for security, maintenance, and clean up.

Always loved the home and home games we played against other teams:
Penn State
Oklahoma
USC
UCLA
Nebraska
Notre Dame
Etc.... The good ole days when the almighty $$$ did not run college football.

Opposing teams hate it when Alabama fans outnumber the home fans

I went to see Bama play Tulane in the Superdome in '92. That was when the visiting QB could get help from the officials for crowd noise. Bama fans had perhaps 80 percent of the dome, and we had it rocking when Tulane was making a rare incursion into the red zone. The QB turned to the official for help, and he just shrugged his shoulders to say, "you're the home team, buddy". The crowd just exploded when he did that.
