🏈 The continuing rumors of Saban and Texas

I'm not a super secret insider nor do I have a friend of a friend that knows what Nick Saban is going to do or thinking. What I do know is Nick Saban and his era of coaching at Alabama is something we would all like to see extended for as long as it's beneficial for The University of Alabama and the Coach. If he decides to take the job at Texas, I will stick to what I have said in the past and thank him for his time here and know it was worth every penny we spent to have the man grace the sidelines.

What is fact is the Saban era at Alabama will come to an inevitable end whether it's by his retirement or him taking another job. When that happens, Alabama will not just go back to the days when a stop-gap hire is acceptable. Alabama will bring in one of the best in the business to replace him. How do I know this? Any of you that watched the 60 Minutes piece on Saban probably already knows the answer when Robert Witt said, "the one best single investment that The University of Alabama has ever made" when referring to the hiring of Nick Saban.

So, whatever the outcome of this year's "Silly Season" and even if Saban decides that Austin represents one last challenge for him in his career, I think Alabama Football will just close one successful chapter in its storied history and a new chapter will begin. When this happens and to borrow a line from Saban himself, "it's not the end, it's just the beginning". Alabama will continue its tradition of winning that has been established for over 100 years. Short of stupidity that penetrated the program in the 90's, nothing is going to stop that now. RTR!

If Saban leaves this year, I expect an offer to the 2nd best coach on Alabama's staff to be made and accepted within the month. (Kirby Smart)

How often has the "coach-in-waiting" concept actually worked?

Bottom line for me is that I am hoping that CNS sees this gimmicky HUNH offense as a new challenge to conquer here in the SEC. He has a chance to surpass the great Bear Bryant in national championships at Bama. Also, with the emergence of Baylor and OSU and their style, I'm not sure he's a Big 12 guy. He's an SEC guy, then maybe B1G.

Lastly, we as fans have gotten spoiled and we would do well to have gratitude for the ride so far.

Grateful for what CNS has accomplished so far. It is a dynasty. Really hope he stays. Thank you Coach Saban, we've been enjoying an historically great ride and it's been your doing. Thank you.

"How often has the "coach-in-waiting" concept actually worked?"

Jimbo Fisher, Chris Peterson, David Shaw just off the top of my head.

Jimbo, yes.

David Shaw was on Harbaugh's staff as a position coach and then coordinator but never had the title "coach in waiting." He was one of several that interviewed for the position including others from the same staff. Petersen on Hawkins staff at BSU, but didn't carry the title.

I'll have to look up the ruling...but if I recall correctly the NCAA basically legislated this "CIW" position out of college football by enforcing recruiting rules on how many in home visits a head coach can have. The viewed the CIW as a official visit from a head coach.

Joker Philips was in the CIW position at Kentucky. He got the job, but you know this story. Muschamp at TX of course...those, with Fisher, are the three I can think of this morning that carried the title.

Wasn't Bill Oliver under the impression he was (or even officially) the HCIW at Alabama? I thought that was why he jumped to Auburn.

Yes, I was just thinking about assistant coaches who became head coaches and were successful. I was responding to the comment that implied that Kirby Smart would not be a good hire because assistant coaches or "coaches in waiting" have not been good hires in the past. I did not take coaches in waiting literally, but as referring to assistant coaches on current staff. I could add Chip Kelly to my list as well.

Yeah you also don't start from scratch if you have a steak dinner already cooked too.

I won't even entertain the idea until some concrete comes out. Not a whole lot of chatter from our camp though.

The LSU people I know are saying that he'll lie to Bama just like he lied to LSU and to the Dolphins. Did he lie to LSU? I say that, until a decision to leave is made, it's not a lie to say, "I'm not leaving."

Be happy if you don't live in Louisiana.

Frankly I miss the days when you woke up in the morning and didn't give a thought about the coaching situation at Alabama because there was never a situation. The Bear was firmly perched on the throne with no intentions of going anywhere. Or was it the same under him every year and i'm just being a nostalgic oldfart?
