🏀 The building of the new Alabama coaching staff

Maybe someone can interpret for me what is being said here? And by the way, who is this "Bucky" that keeps coming up in the basketball threads. As always, thank you for your assistance ahead of time.

Derrick doesn't agree with Mack. Bucky in the basketball threads is the HS coach at Mountain Brook HS, home of T. Watford, top in state recruit and Top 100 guy as well.

OK, makes sense with Watford. I genuinely hope this kid is not a one and doner. I'm going to have to learn to speak Twitter. Thanks
How is knowing Bucky's name "speaking Twitter?" Confused me here, TUSK.

Bucky McMillan

In the thread when the board was discussing who the next coach was going to be, I believe it was @#80 who mentioned there were those who were calling for Bucky to be hired as head coach. There were more than a few.

In Oats press conference (here's a Twitter reference to confuse you) it was almost like a subtweet...questions and answers about recruiting that led to Oats commenting on jobs he'd been offered and how he'd never used a high school coaching position to recruit or sign players. (You'll have to listen to the presser again to get his full comments versus my paraphrasing what he said.) It was a clear comment to Bucky and Trendon, in my view, without making it about Trendon and Bucky.)

(Probably a good idea to have a thread about how Oats is going to fill out his staff I guess...unless someone else starts one, I'll do it later. @Sgt. Lincoln Osiris is pretty well versed on that situation...should we volunteer him?)

I was just being lazy and not typing Coach Bucky McMillan when I made the reference. Assumed everyone knew who i was referring to.

I do find it interesting that FunnyMaine shutdown his Twitter account. Why give the social media crowd that power...

@TUSKtimes, So you know who Bucky is but didn't catch the reference? Got ya. FWIW, I've seen rumors about him that stretch from ** on the court position to the new ladies coach.

**The one rumor I don't get is this one. It's not about if he could do the job but those that have pushed his name did so under the premise that Bama needs that in-state, "Built by Bama," guy. That seems covered by Pett. (Which, leads to another thought. How many assistant coaches has anyone seen that's made it through not only one, but two firings of their head coaches and still have a job at the same school?)

Jackasses actually get mad to the point where he just said ' F it' and deleted his profile because all of the nonsense a bunch of childish Alabama 'fans' threw at him. People need to grow the hell up.

There were two ways to read the post by Josh. One, Jamaine needs to grow the hell up or fans need to grow the hell up. Both fit in this situation.

No, not until @UAgrad93 explained it. No big deal, I absolutely don't keep up with high school coaches. Until they get to Tuscaloosa.

I think Bama fans need to get used to the idea that Oats is going to bring a few of his guys on staff as soon as the new coaching search is over. Which it may already be as far as I know. Watford bio says he has won 3 state championships in a row, so "Bucky" must have it going on. Someone like Pettway might keep the door open to Bama recruits more so than a specific high school coach. I'm guessing, but apparently, Bucky coaches a lot like Oats, cause we be running. That could be a deal maker.

He has already brought some of his staff. DBO, for one. A lot depends on what happens in Buffalo.

In the thread about Trendon you can see Bryan Hodgson in Destin with CNO. The question is what happens with Jim Whitesell. He's currently listed as the Interim at Buffalo but there's no decision by their admin whether they are going to give him the full time gig or not. IF they don't and Oats brings JW in with BH and he keeps Pett as suspected there's no room for Bucky as a floor coach. (New NCAA rules eliminate him in an ADMIN role.)

As I understand the situation today we're looking at two scenarios (and with all coaching staff changes this is easy labeled "fluid.")

Oats,
Hodgeson
Pett,
Bucky / Whitesell.

FWIW, it's likely a safe assumption we see the answers by next Friday, the 12th. Basketball is in a quiet period until Wednesday. Thursday starts the dead period until the following Thursday and then that Friday basketball is back in its recruiting period.

Another note:

To date, as far as I know this morning, we don't have an indication of who is going to be in charge of the S&C program. As of right now Cochran is leading the group in a temporary role.

That's the cool thing about early basketball signing. They absolutely have got to get this thing up and running very soon. I suspect the rest of Avery's class is still out there as well?

On a side note, I read that our basketball strength and conditioning coach is leaving. I know this doesn't sound like much but the kids we are playing against look like they are living in the weight room. We don't look that cut and carved to tell you the truth. Is it a big deal? I think it ranks right up there these days with Scott Cochran's worth to the football team. I hope Oats has an answer to getting bigger and stronger, and frankly, meaner and tougher.

I have no issue with bringing your own staff IF you can keep them all together. A LOT of moving parts though with the Buffalo jobs, HC/assistants/S&C positions to be filled. Do any stay in their current position? Elevated in position? Strong roots to stay? etc. I wonder if Pett can survive another coaching change. He does have connections and ties and would be an asset to keep but McMillan is the "hot name" out there in the HS ranks.

On "Hey Coach" tonight, he emphasized the fact that he's brought his strength coach with him.

From Hey Coach last night:

“Bryan Hodgson came with me from Buffalo. Bryan and myself for the most part recruited the entire roster at Buffalo. He’s an unbelievable recruiter. We were getting top 100 players at Buffalo, so I can’t wait to see what we do down here. When you walk in with this (A) on, you’ve got some credibility right out of the gate. (Hodgson) has been my right-hand man for four years. He’s coming.

“We’re getting the support staff put together. I’ll say this they’ve got three really good assistants here that I’m getting to know pretty well. Can’t keep them all. I’ll probably keep at least one just to keep some continuity and we’ll go from there. I’m in the process of sorting through all that.

“The roster’s the most important thing to me right now. Obviously the staff helps with the roster. I don’t want to rush into anything. I don’t think it’s fair to (the current staff) or to the players that I just come in and fire everybody. They don’t deserve that.

“We’ve got the strength coach. Our guy from Buffalo (Mike Snowden). He was unbelievable. I got a new assistant two years ago that will be coming down, but the assistant will be in a different role. We’ll figure the rest of staff out as we go through the next couple of weeks.”

Just for the record, I had no idea who Bucky was either....for a minute I thought someone was mentioning Brutus Buckeye. JK

•It's my opinion there are some that think if Oats hires Bucky that'll in turn translate to Bama signing Trendon.
•There are those who've watched Mt. Brook basketball that like his style and believe it would fit well with Oats. He's has success there, a lot. Some •discount it using the old "let's see him do it without transfers." In a sense his story is somewhat like Pruitt's...a guy moving up the ranks and getting attention.
•As an educator and administrator you'll understand how some boxes are checked and some highlighted. With sportsbooks being so easily accessed today do you want guys who like the wager on sports in your athletic department?

I'm of the impression that we can set aside the Bucky to Bama thoughts. I don't believe it has a bearing on Watford because of the role Bucky has played with Watford.

Coach number three is still to be determined.

I never really looked at getting Bucky being a packaged deal, more to the point you're making above that he'd be a good fit in the system not to mention Nate providing an opportunity for a high school coach to get to the next level. The bigger question, can he recruit...enter Antoine.

That being said, check out the S/C coaches background. Love that they are mentioning his medals, pretty much everyone I served with that was worth a shit had a NAM (Naval and Marine Corps Achievement Medal).

Michael Snowden begins his second season at Buffalo after joining the staff from George Mason, his alma mater.
In his first year working with the men's basketball program at UB, Snowden helped the Bulls to a school record 27 wins, while Buffalo picked up its first ever win in the NCAA Tournament.
Snowden returned to George Mason in 2016 after serving as a strength and conditioning graduate assistant with the VCU men's basketball team during the 2015-16 season. He also served as a strength and conditioning intern with the University of Maryland football team (2015), the University of Mary Washington (2014) and at George Mason (2013-14). In addition, he worked as a sports performance coach with Strength and Performance Training, Inc., from 2014-15.
He graduated from George Mason in 2015 with his bachelor's degree in Kinesiology. He earned his Master's degree in Sport Leadership from VCU in 2016. He is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) by the National Strength & Conditioning Association. He is also a Level 1 Sports Performance Coach through USA Weightlifting (USAW) and a Performance Enhancement Specialist through the National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM)
Snowden also spent seven years as active-duty military in the Navy. From 2005-09, he served on the USS George Washington and received the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal. From 2009-12, he served on Marine Helicopter Squadron One. He was awarded the Presidential Service Badge for his service to President Barack Obama and the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal.

Oats mentioned he'd been receiving phone calls inquiring about the assistants job(s.) Here's some context there. Any coach worth is salt is going to have his eye on assistants. It's no different than the AD, agreed? A perk that comes from being in Tuscaloosa, versus Buffalo, is being able to offer more money to guys you couldn't have afforded in the past.

I've not looked, but now I'm curious how much Hodgeson was making at Buffalo.
