There are two things that strike me as interesting about this story.

One:

<blockquote class="twitter-tweet"><p>BREAKING Brian Kelly will be staying at Notre Dame, a source just told CBS.</p>&mdash; Bruce Feldman (@BFeldmanCBS) <a href="https://twitter.com/BFeldmanCBS/status/290224402015076352" data-datetime="2013-01-12T22:31:04+00:00">January 12, 2013</a></blockquote>

Is it just me or does this seem like a story NBC Sports should be breaking versus CBS?

Two, as an observation: I guess the easiest way to avoid having to confront a fan base after your team has its ass whipped in the BCSNC game is interview with NFL teams, take a vacation, and then announce your staying?

I'm left with the impression Kelly had ND's balls in his hand and just squeezed them for a raise/extension. While the circumstances are different, I don't see much difference in this and Miles getting both when those rumors hit he may have been in the sights of Arkansas—which he never was according to the records available.

Can't say I blame him either way. It's hard to imagine his stock being much higher, despite the drubbing he took against Alabama. Unless he gets back to the BCS game next year, his negotiating leverage is not likely to get any higher.

Tim Watts said it perfectly yesterday.

<blockquote class="twitter-tweet"><p>How do u distract a fan base from getting routed in NC game? Interview with NFL, go on vacation, hide out 3 more days, announce ur staying.</p>&mdash; Tim Watts (@TimWatts_BOL) <a href="https://twitter.com/TimWatts_BOL/status/290234616558792704" data-datetime="2013-01-12T23:11:39+00:00">January 12, 2013</a></blockquote>

If Kelly did this to get more money (strong arming), then what does that say about the administration. All I hear is what a great education you get from Notre Dame - both the President and AD are ND graduates...see where I'm going?

Did you just make us all picture leprechaun balls?
Thanks, pal. I really needed that..not.

For what it's worth, Kelly and ND (and all their balls) have been processed. They won't make it back to the NCG anytime soon, imo.
