In 1959, LSU was led by Heisman Trophy winner Billy Cannon. They were undefeated and ranked #1 in the country going into the seventh game of the season against a #3 Ole Miss team that had a great defense. Ole Miss led late in the game 3-0. LSU went on to win that game 7-3. The teams played again in the Sugar Bowl that season with Ole Miss winning the rematch by a score of 21-0.
