🏈 That one is going to haunt Beamer for a long time

Maybe I'm in the minority here, but I have to say that I think VaTech HORRIBLY mismanaged that drive at the 2-minute mark.

They had BSU beat. Had 'em. Finished. Done.

There was a lot that I disagree with, but mostly this one thing; they didn't unleash Taylor in the end.

This is what got them last year against us. They decided that they were going to make a drop back passer out of Taylor if it killed them. That's all fine and good except that (1) Taylor is not a very good passer, and (2) he's far more dangerous on the move running with the ball.

What better time than at that 2-minute mark drive to utilize Taylor's running abilities?

IMHO, Taylor could have ended that game himself if given the chance to freelance a little and create on the fly. I was shocked to see some of the play calls that came in there when they were trying to ice the game. Not to mention that Taylor (and this is solely on him) was initiating the play with sometimes as much as 5 or more seconds left on the play clock. Unbelievable.

I don't know about anyone else, but when VaTech had to punt, I pretty much knew Boise would score and win the game. Call it a gut instinct, but you don't give a team like BSU an opportunity like that. Almost a full 2 minutes to score. No problem for those guys.

If I am Beamer, this one haunts me a for a long, long time.

you can say that again, Boise State used ~40 secs to move the ball better than half the field and score, the penalty didn't hurt either at the beginning.

I'm dumbfounded that
1) VaTech couldn't move the ball to kill the clock more, instead giving them under 2 mins to score and Boise State played it perfectly.
2) as you suggest, VaTech went for big throws, almost connected on a few. Remember that they only had 69 secs left to score and they squandered that.

My take away from this game is that we've quite possibly seen the end of Beamer Ball. For years VA Tech thrived on special teams play. Beamer ran clinics for coaches to come learn his special teams coaching knowledge. The last few years have been hit or miss for VA Tech, they weren't terrible but there was certainly a lack of big plays from their special teams unit. Boise State out-played them last night on special teams as well. For a coach that once prided himself on special teams success, last night should be a punch in the face.

Although to your point, Beamer managed the game worse than Les Miles when they had a chance to ice it. VA Tech roared back and had Boise on the ropes and just couldn't put it away. They get the ball back and have the chance to run the clock out and escape a winner, with serious BCS hopes, and they flat blew it. Horrible play calling, poor clock management. Your best playmaker on offense takes the snap every play--use that. Hell most teams line up in a Wildcat to get the ball into a playmaker's hands quicker, they have one built into their offense. They should've roled Taylor out of the pocket and let him open the field up a bit. It would have allowed Taylor to chew up chunks of yards and probably would've opened running lanes for the backs on other plays.

Y'all are right on all counts. I will say that Boise, late in the game, was rushing Taylor in a manner much like we did last year, to keep him in the pocket. VaTech was using their power back to get that first down when they had a chance to put it away and then Taylor got sacked dancing around in the pocket. If they had just run the ball two more times they would have gotten ten yards. Even when they had long yardage with two minutes to go, Boise's out of TO's - run it again and bleed another 40 seconds before your punt.

I will say the personal foul that put Boise in business was marginal. The receiver was still running and just barely out of bounds.

If Beamer had a smaller hat and forgot how to formulate words he would've been just like Miles.

Those uniforms were atrocious, even by color blind VaTech standards. It was tough to see where the sleeves ended and the tattoos began.

Another pet peeve: the man love for defensive coordinators. If I never hear the name Bud Foster again or see him squatting on the sidelines I'll be just fine. The depiction of D-coordinator as superhuman probably predates Brother Oliver and Joe Lee Dunn, but the tendency for broadcasters to scream a D guru's name (Bud Foster, Tyrone Nix or Will Muschamp) whenever they run out of words is ridiculous. I'd rather them say "you know" or "uhhhhhhhh".

I agree with pretty much all thats been said but I just couldn't figure out why Evans didnt get more of a shot. I mean only 3 carries for a former all star? Williams just wasnt doing it. I know Boise was getting some good penetration but at times it just seemed like he tried to slam in it in a non-hole rather than bounce it outside (which is what he's best at).

Speaking of Les Miles, how did you like his comment about running the victory formation that last drive in which the LSU back fumbled?

Victory formation? What the heck was Les talking about? The QB tossed the ball to the runningback on that play!

Why would anyone call a toss play instead of handing the ball off or taking a knee in "victory formation?"

Now back to the original topic . . .

V Tech was horribly unprepared for the game on Mon. night. They were flat and didnt seem well prepared for what they were going to see on the field. I just dont undersatnd how a coach of Beamers quality doesnt have his team ready to play. A few things I took away from the game.

1. V. Tech looked soft!

2. They (V Tech) were way overrated being ranked in the top ten.

3. Having receivers running uncovered in the secondary will not win you ball games.

4. V Tech was undisciplined. Unususal for a Beamer coached team.

5. Boise State has a good ball club. They are undersized by SEC standards but are quick and are very sure tacklers in the open field.

I think that VaTech has become one of those teams that year in, year out, gets ranked higher than they should. Maybe people are basing it off Beamer Ball expectations or memories from the Vick era. Not sure. But VaTech has pretty much become overrated.

Their season has effectively ended now 3 straight years in their first game. Not really the sign of a dominant program.

va Tech is in good shape to be an 8-4, 9-3 football team in a weaker power conference. They would win the WAC, minus Boise in there.

But, having said that, I don't think it's time to push the eject button on the Hokies yet. They are dealing with Butch Davis' recruiting in the region the past few years, and it's taking a toll. They just don't have 3-5 studs on defense anymore, and a legitimate big time ball player in the backfield.

I'd also add that many of the players they have starred over the past 10-12 years didn't pan out in the NFL. These were scheme or system players, who benefitted from Beamer ball. I think the shine is gone, but they still can show up and take it to you, and I think they are good enough to upset someone this year. Miami certainly shouldn't take them lightly.
