Texas State installs ā€˜cool’ artificial surface at Bobcat Stadium

A new artificial playing surface has been installed at Bobcat Stadium in San Marcos that Texas State officials predict will be 35 degrees cooler than traditional sand/rubber infill system.

Texas State’s home facility will become the first FBS football program in the nation to install the FieldTurf Revolution 360 turf system. The playing surface’s top dressing surface is cooler than its former playing surface, which absorbed heat and caused the surface temperature to rise.

ā€œHaving a new playing surface installed in Bobcat Stadium is a real plus as it provides proof that Texas State Football is growing and that the future of the program is bright,ā€ said football head coach Everett Withers.

Revolution 360 is an improved version of the market-leading Revolution fiber which was created in 2011. NFL teams such as the Seattle Seahawks are located in stadiums that have already undergone the installation of the Revolution 360 FieldTurf with many more set for installation.

ā€œNothing else on the market compares to what FieldTurf Revolution 360 can provide in regards to athlete safety and footing coupled with surface durability and visual appeal,ā€ Texas State assistant athletic director for game operations and facilities Jeremy Stolfa said. ā€œWith the additive of CoolPlay V2, Jim Wacker Field will be noticeably cooler than traditional artificial fields in the Texas heat.ā€

The new playing surface already is being used for football fields at Nebraska, Arizona, Notre Dame, Georgia, and Maryland. The only other FieldTurf Revolution 360 is the soccer field at UTEP.

What I think about every time someone mentions that school.

My sons HS, Sylacauga High, is installing one of these AstroPlay surfaces. It has a cooling system below the actual playing surface to keep the temps down and will be using shredded tennis shoe soles for pellets instead of the tires. My son is excited to say the least.

Pumping water?

I'm not sure @TerryP. Our stadium was built in '48 and is finally receiving a much needed facelift. New concession stands, restrooms, locker rooms for soccer, track, and visitor dressing room, along with the new surface. It is being paid with a tax that was passed in '05 when we built a new middle school. It was set to expire but was voted on last Spring to be continued for these renovations. These renovations total upwards of $20-25 million and our baseball field is being renovated as well to the tune of $1-2 million. For a 5A school, we are finally stepping up to even the playing field. Safe to say that the "arms race" is in the HS ranks just like college and universities.

If they're using cork infill instead of shredded tire rubber, it may be safer as well. There's growing evidence that the chemicals in the tire rubber granules cause cancer. Soccer goalkeepers are most at risk.

Lots of Phillies and Eagles players, fans, and staff got a rare form of brain cancer which many (including the victims) attribute to the crap they put into the turf at the Vet. I am a firm believer that that stuff is toxic.
