Sophomore Texas quarterback Sam Ehlinger has not hidden his desire to face the defending National Champion Alabama ever since he arrived on the 40 Acres. The Longhorns QB seemed to be a bit disappointed when Texas announced it would face the Crimson Tide in 2022 and 2023, which will be after his time ends playing for Texas football. Ehlinger, who has a personal relationship with Alabama QB Tua Tagovailoa, returned the discussion about the Longhorns and Crimson Tide over the weekend after taking part in the 2018 Steve Clarkson Quarterback Retreat in Los Angeles.

In a photo with Tagovailoa, Ehlinger brought up the topic near and dear to Texas fans: Would the Longhorns have beaten Alabama in the 2009 BCS National Championship game if Colt McCoy did not leave the game in the first quarter after he injured his shoulder?

"This guy knows what would have happened if Colt didn't get injured," Ehlinger tweeted along with a photo of the Alabama QB. "Much love (Tua Tagovailoa)."

Even though the game went down more than eight years ago, the topic has likely haunted Texas fans for the entirety of that time. In fact, the question did haunt former head coach Mack Brown, who previously said the season following the 2009 National Championship run was like a hangover, and also led to the Longhorns first and only losing record under Brown.

Texas will have the chance to redeem itself against Alabama, though it will be several years before the Longhorns and Crimson Tide will face off. Earlier this month, Texas and Alabama announced its change of plans for a non-conference home-and-home series beginning in 2022 season. The Longhorns had previously scheduled Ohio State for a home-and-home series in 2022 and 2023, but postponed that non-conference match up to 2025 and 2026, in an attempt to help out the Buckeyes, who also had Notre Dame on the schedule for those two years. After the University of Texas announced its future scheduling plans with Alabama, the Longhorns' athletic director made it a point to lock in a home and home series, and not a neutral site match up.

"We’ve been working on this for the last couple of months," said University of Texas Vice President of athletics and AD Chris Del Conte of his conversations with Alabama athletic director Greg Byrne. "We’re not playing you in the Chick-fil-A (Kickoff Game)," University of Texas Vice President of athletics and AD Chris Del Conte said of his conversation with Alabama athletic director Greg Byrne. "It’s home. You’re going to be in Austin and I’m going to go to Alabama."

Though the meeting between the two schools will allow for Texas to make up for the loss in the BCS National Championship, it will not solve the age-old question of what would have happened with a healthy McCoy.

They talk about how an Alabama loss can hurt you for the next game, but as Mack Brown should know, it destroyed the football program, amazing. And didn't Tebow try to warn Colt about Bama's defense? I believe his reply was we have some pretty good defenses in the Big 12. Hello Marcel Dareus.

Mack Brown destroyed that football program.

They did go 5-7 the next season. But Brown came out of the natty a little shellshocked. People close to the program said that Brown was certain they were going to beat Alabama. Instead of rededicating his efforts he sounded a lot like Colt and talked way too much about what if. I recall how he tried to change the offensive philosophy after the Bama game. Wanted to add the power back into their offense and they went to a running first approach. I remember telling my wife that I think the Texas spread is dead.

Those in the program did call Mac Brown the King of entitlement and I do think he and his staff got lazy and just thought the program was running itself. Another miscalculation.

Crazy thing to me, Tim, is Brown was pulling the same thing that put Tuberville and Fulmer out to pasture: the idea he can coach and recruit from behind his desk. Now, he could do both. But, not as well as those who were actually on the road/fields working.

I always assumed the issue with Brown and Texas was that they received a lot of clout simply due to the revenue they brought in, and not necessarily the team they put on the field. The Big 8 and Big 12 were never juggernauts, so they dominated a conference that had very little competition, much like Oklahoma does now. A lot of oil money and the media was fascinated by the numbers they put out. I never considered Mack Brown a dynamite coach, and not even remotely close to the level of a Bowdon, Carrol, Saban, Meyer, Stoops and other peers during his time that he competed against.

This tweet is confusing. He's basically stating their backup QB didn't get it done, but the guy beside him did. Gilbert was not a chump either...

Mack Brown killed that program long before the night Colt got hurt... In fact, it probably start the day after Texas beat USC for the national championship. He was L A Z Y recruiter and got complacent.

Dear Lord! This BS again?? Why can't these dumbass Texas fans not see that Colt didn't play defense, the defense that Ingram and Richardson ran all night on?

But they were the best rushing defense in the nation...

So a current recruit from Texas asks a current recruit from Alabama about a football game that happened almost 10 years ago? You can't buy that type of publicity. When I was growing up I use to always hear about Joe Willie's TD against Texas and Nobis in the Orange Bowl that wasn't. I mostly get a kick out of knowing that even after all these years the Rose Bowl is still raging in their Texas noggins. Turnabout is fair play and a b***h.

For me, there are 2 teams that talk the talk but the credentials aren't there. Michigan and Texas. They walk around like the chosen few but when you start adding up NCs it sure doesn't take long.

Easy to do when all you face is passing offenses.

Oh man, that ole tried and true "But if Colt didnt get hurt" from Texas. Yeah, well, if Colt wasn't as soft as Charmin Ultra maybe he wouldn't have gotten hurt.

53 career starts as college QB at a P5 school, many would kill for that longevity.

Just a freak accident and have to suspect that him or his day may have overacted a bit to protect an NFL career? I remember sitting in the stands for the game wondering WTF happened. The tiny ass video board was behind me, seemed like it took forever to find out what happened.
