Sophomore Texas quarterback Sam Ehlinger has not hidden his desire to face the defending National Champion Alabama ever since he arrived on the 40 Acres. The Longhorns QB seemed to be a bit disappointed when Texas announced it would face the Crimson Tide in 2022 and 2023, which will be after his time ends playing for Texas football. Ehlinger, who has a personal relationship with Alabama QB Tua Tagovailoa, returned the discussion about the Longhorns and Crimson Tide over the weekend after taking part in the 2018 Steve Clarkson Quarterback Retreat in Los Angeles.
In a photo with Tagovailoa, Ehlinger brought up the topic near and dear to Texas fans: Would the Longhorns have beaten Alabama in the 2009 BCS National Championship game if Colt McCoy did not leave the game in the first quarter after he injured his shoulder?
"This guy knows what would have happened if Colt didn't get injured," Ehlinger tweeted along with a photo of the Alabama QB. "Much love (Tua Tagovailoa)."
Even though the game went down more than eight years ago, the topic has likely haunted Texas fans for the entirety of that time. In fact, the question did haunt former head coach Mack Brown, who previously said the season following the 2009 National Championship run was like a hangover, and also led to the Longhorns first and only losing record under Brown.
Texas will have the chance to redeem itself against Alabama, though it will be several years before the Longhorns and Crimson Tide will face off. Earlier this month, Texas and Alabama announced its change of plans for a non-conference home-and-home series beginning in 2022 season. The Longhorns had previously scheduled Ohio State for a home-and-home series in 2022 and 2023, but postponed that non-conference match up to 2025 and 2026, in an attempt to help out the Buckeyes, who also had Notre Dame on the schedule for those two years. After the University of Texas announced its future scheduling plans with Alabama, the Longhorns' athletic director made it a point to lock in a home and home series, and not a neutral site match up.
"Weāve been working on this for the last couple of months," said University of Texas Vice President of athletics and AD Chris Del Conte of his conversations with Alabama athletic director Greg Byrne. "Weāre not playing you in the Chick-fil-A (Kickoff Game)," University of Texas Vice President of athletics and AD Chris Del Conte said of his conversation with Alabama athletic director Greg Byrne. "Itās home. Youāre going to be in Austin and Iām going to go to Alabama."
Though the meeting between the two schools will allow for Texas to make up for the loss in the BCS National Championship, it will not solve the age-old question of what would have happened with a healthy McCoy.
