šŸˆ Texas A&M QB Asks For Release—Dad denies transfer rumors

Dad: Aggies' Hill hasn't decided yet on transfer

On Friday reports surfaced that Texas A&M quarterback Kenny Hill was planning on a transfer to TCU, but Hill's father put the brakes on that speculation Friday night.

According to Hill's father, while his son is definitely seeking a transfer, any talk about TCU is premature.

"While Kenny is indeed planning on transferring, we have not committed to any school at this time," Hill's father told FoxSports.com. "We will begin meeting with schools on the 15th of January when the dead period is over. Any previous reports suggesting we are committed to any school is simply inaccurate."

It's been a crazy season for Hill. He began the 2014 season as Texas A&M's starting quarterback, and after throwing for 1,094 yards and 11 touchdowns in the first three games of the season he was receiving Heisman hype. A rougher October soon followed, and after a three-game losing streak Hill lost his starting job to Kyle Allen.

Once Hill transfers he'll have two years of eligibility remaining after sitting out the 2015 season.

Yes, I know: The Trill is gone.

Now, with that out of the way, there have been rumblings of late that Kenny Hill was considering a transfer from Texas A&M. Overnight, it appears those rumors are coming closer to fruition as Travis Haney of ESPN.com writes that, citing sources close to both the player and the program, ā€œHill has asked for his release from the school and is expected to transfer.ā€

Considering that Hill lost the starting quarterback job to Kyle Allen in late October, in part because of a two-game suspension and in large part for poor performance, the news isn’t all that surprising.

What is surprising is how far and how fast Hill’s star plummeted.

In the season opener, Hill torched the South Carolina defense for over 500 yards of total offense, leading to premature Heisman speculation and his parents trademarking a nickname. Hill followed that up with eight passing touchdowns and no interceptions in wins over Lamar and Rice, adding to the hype. Over the next five games, however, he tossed eight picks.

After the 59-0 embarrassment at the hands of Alabama in mid-October, head coach Kevin Sumlin reopened the quarterback competition during the subsequent bye week. A few days later, Hill’s two-game suspension for violating unspecified team rules opened the door for the true freshman Allen to take over the starting job for the Nov. 1 win over Louisiana-Monroe and, as it turns out, for the remainder of the year.

The combination of Hill’s missteps on and off the field along with Allen’s pedigree made the latter’s ascension to the starting job an inevitable. Allen came to College Station last year as a five-star member of the Aggies’ 2014 recruiting class, rated as the No. 1 pro-style quarterback in the country and the No. 7 player at any position.

As for Hill’s future, that’s unclear. Coming out of high school in Southlake, Tex., as a four-star 2013 recruit, Hill held offers from, among others, Baylor, Houston, Kansas State, Ole Miss, Missouri, TCU and Texas Tech. TCU is already the rumored front-runner.

If Hill ends up with the Horned Frogs, he’d have to sit out the 2015 season and then have two years of eligibility remaining beginning in 2016.

Kenny Hill Wants Out Of A&M
ESPN Texas A&M reporter Sam Khan Jr. discusses sophomore quarterback Kenny Hill's desire to transfer.

Texas A&M coach Kevin Sumlin confirmed Friday that quarterback Kenny Hill has been granted his release from the program and can transfer to any school of his choice.

"[Kenny] is meeting with his family and figuring out what he wants to do," Sumlin told 105.3 The Fan in Dallas.

Phil Ellsworth/ESPN ImagesKenny Hill started strong for the Aggies, leading them to a 5-0 mark, before Texas A&M began to slide and he lost his starting job.

Big 12 champion TCU is a strong possibility for Hill, a source told ESPN.com's Travis Haney.

Hill replaced former Heisman Trophy winner Johnny Manziel for the Aggies and surged to the forefront of the early Heisman race with a 511-yard, three-touchdown demolition of fellow SEC opponent South Carolina to open the 2014 season.

Soon after, Hill's parents filed for a trademark for the nickname "Trill," which Hill adopted in the wake of the revelatory performance.

Hill and the Aggies continued their march through September, preying mostly on weaker nonconference foes to land at 5-0 and earn a No. 6 ranking after the season's first month.

Then things changed. Texas A&M lost its next three games and five of its final seven. By November, Hill was replaced by freshman Kyle Allen, who led the team to wins against Louisiana-Monroe, Auburn and West Virginia to salvage an 8-5 finish.

When Allen took over, Hill was serving a two-game suspension for a violation of team rules and athletic department policy. Aggies coaches, though, insisted Allen would have taken over regardless of Hill's status.

Hill also was suspended for the final part of spring practice in 2014 after an alcohol-related arrest.

Hill's final numbers for 2014 -- 2,649 yards, 23 touchdowns, eight interceptions and a 67 percent completion rate -- were still exceptional.

If TCU is Hill's destination, he will be forced to sit out 2015 in accordance with the NCAA's transfer rule.
