🏈 Terry's thread about missing sports got me to thinking

ESPNU has been showing a ton of older games this past week. At work this morning I watched some of the FSU/UF game from 2004.

More than anything, I miss Ron Franklin and Mike Gottfried. They started with Adrian Karstan and Dr Punch on the sidelines, but by then had moved to Erin Andrews.

I guess it is the era and growing up with those guys. I liken it to when I was in high school and working at a local pharmacy. All the pharmacist were Auburn grads and one Saturday night I was working, the pharmacist I was working with, was listening to the Barn play. Jim Fyfe was on the call and she said when she hears his voice, she knows it's fall. She has memories of being an undergrad, and sorority rush, along with all the good times from being in college.

Hearing Franklin and Gottfried this morning took me back to being a kid in my young 20's, rushing home on Saturday evening to sit in the living room with my dad to watch the big game of the week on ESPN on Saturday nights. I miss Ron Franklin and Gottfried calling games.

Love Ron Franklin. Hate he got too old, but he was awesome. Him and Mike were just great together. They were there along with Keith Jackson (ABC) with me growing up on ESPN, so when I heard the Florida-Florida State game this morning I stopped working and just listened.

The rest of the story about getting old.....Ron was one of the 1st to get the axe to ugly women sideline reporters... and she was ugly

Veteran ESPN sportscaster Ron Franklin has been fired after he reportedly made sexist comments to sideline reporter Jeannine Edwards, calling her in a condescending tone “sweet baby” or “sweetcakes,” according to different accounts, as well as an “a**hole.”

At 69 I have been around your know( Lt Col Frank Slade) but I find myself not missing sports as much as I thought I may. JMO but both pro sports are full of Me people and few We folks and college football is just behind them. I am wrong more than right but I believe Nick's football roster is more one-sided we Me's and has been for a couple of years. It's about the route to the NFL 1st and the U of A 2nd.

I miss Franklin & Gottfried too but their run as broadcasters didn't have much 'Bama glory to cover. I began to hate them during the UT losing streak but I got over it.

I'm embarrassed to say this but I loved the Jefferson Pilot sports days because back then I was a cook at a steak house back then & that was the only time slot I could get to watch a full 'Bama game. But one of my best memories of football back then was when Jay Barker out threw Eric Zeier UGA & he masterfully positioned Michael Proctor to a game winning field goal. I didn't get to watch that game that night because it was late game but the restaurant manager kept giving me updates (he was a UGA fan) because it looked like they had us. I made 20 bucks that night among a bunch of pissed off UGA fans.

Keith Jackson is timeless... I will always remember him calling the first NC game for 'Bama that I was old enough to enjoy during the 92 Sugar Bowl. That was one of the biggest NC game's in Bama history IMHO. It was very gratifying to come back to school from the holiday break to see all the prick Miami fans eating crow.

We didn't have much luck with Texas during Coach Bryant's years. They got us in 72 and 81 (seasons). Bama tied them in 60 in the Bluebonnet Bowl and that was the 1st game Bama wore the Crimson headgears.

I forgot about the 64 Joe Willie didn't score Orange Bowl that we lost to the Horns

Keith Jackson had a way of weaving words together that made you feel like you were a part of the game. He was magical in my opinion calling a football game from Legion Field, The Football Capital of The South. When you grow up in the 60's and 70's, you only got one game a week and you wanted it to be a Bama game with Keith Jackson doing the play by play.
