šŸˆ Team Report: Fall Scrimmage #1 : Comments, articles, and discussions covering Bama's scrimmage.

I haven't seen any mention of a return man....Is there any improvement in this area? Seems like last year it was catch it......run to the 20....and go down with first contact. We always started with horrible field position. We have great D....awesome punter......i would even take a "good" return guy..doesn't have to be great even!

They don't do live returns so there's nothing to report.

While he eventually made the right decisions and didn't throw any interceptions, he was very late and indecisive. On several occasions he would have good gains but was a beat or two late, which caused the receiver to run out of field or allowed the defender to make the play.

This has been Coker's downfall since he arrived. If he's still doing it at this point, I don't think you want him on the field in a do or die situation, I know I don't. Late in the SEC = INT. Indecisive = sacked or flushed from the pocket. Was Cornwell being disciplined or was he getting the "AJ" treatment: if you're such hot shit, let's see what you can do with the scout team? I don't know the answer to that one, but for a guy who was supposed to be 1B to Coker's 1A, it makes you wonder what he was doing with the 3's. The QB situation is maddeningly frustrating. We don't need anybody to be Tom Brady, just be Trent freakin' Dilfer! I'm REALLY frustrated with Coker and Cornwell. Both of these guys are supposed to be players, both are in their 2nd year with Kiffin, and both can't get out of their own way. Meanwhile, Barnett is making rookie mistakes but he's playing like a guy that wants to make things happen and wants to win the job. He may not have the speed of the game down yet, but he's got the moxie. Coker's apparently a mental pussy and Cornwell just isn't playing consistently enough to earn Saban's trust. Morris sounds like he might win the job by default just by not screwing up as much as all the others. Bateman needs to change positions or go home, the audition's over kid. Sorry it didn't work out, thanks for playing. The frightening thing is, and Boz, you'll have to enlighten us on this, but being the first scrimmage and with all the questions surrounding the position, I doubt Saban really put any of the QB's in a tough spot with situational work like being down by 4 with 1:30 left and on our own 20 and out of timeouts. In other words, this was probably just a vanilla scrimmage with few or no real curves thrown at them yet. It only gets tougher from here. Somebody better step up and take the helm of this ass-kicking machine.

Coker is quickly losing stock. He should at least have clear line of decision making ahead of the rest. Bad throws I get, it is hard, but decision making, he should be the clear leader in that area.

I am just flabbergasted that Barnett is doing so well for a True Fresh. If this kid just plays smart ball & zero turnovers, he may become the favorite. And if it does turn out to be 2011 again (like McCarron & Simms), it will just come down to who makes the less mistakes.

If reports are true... and 5 out of 5 guys look incompetent... I think the system is partially to blame. If these guys are all confused on where to go with the ball, maybe things are a little too complicated.

I've never been big on Kiffin... But I thought he did a really nice job last year. There were obviously some frustrating games/series/plays but overall he did a great job with Blake. He is going to earn his money this year. Although I do think this 5 QB scenario is much of his and Saban's own doing.

With this schedule, QB will make or break 2-3 games for us this year.
I've said something similar to this more than a handful of times during the spring and summer. One exception.

With this schedule, QB could possibly make or break 2-3 games for us this year which Killer touches on here...

Arkansas, LSU, Ole Miss and Auburn will force us to throw the ball. We'd better to be able to do it effectively and consistently or we'll take a loss in two of those games.

Out of those four teams, only one returns a QB with experience; Arkansas. But there's a caveat here. What do we know about Brandon Allen and his ability to pass the ball? Ole Miss isn't in any better of a situation at QB than Bama. LSU is worse than that. Auburn? A better shot here of having to score but still there's questions unanswered with Johnson. It'll take more than one half of a game against Arkansas at the beginning of last season for me to give the same "kudo's" we're seeing national pundits give him.

Are you suggesting we'll have trouble running the ball on these teams? LSU was a middle of the pack team (conference wise) when it came to defending the run last season and their depth is worse this fall than last season. Arkansas? Lost their playmakers on their DL. Auburn was worse than LSU last season. Ole Miss? Okay, there's a good DL coming back but an offense that is looking for ... a damn QB.

Alabama returns 40 starts, 113th in the country, 12th in the conference.

A very deceiving stat, in my opinion. We're just a few years removed from UT having more starts than any other team in the SEC. It numbered in the hundreds. Yet, they only won one conference game that season; against UK.

On the other side of the ball ... remember CJ wasn't considered a starter on defense but how much action had he seen before that season?

Although I do think this 5 QB scenario is much of his and Saban's own doing.

In my opinion, that's painting with too broad of a brush stroke. Quite frankly, I don't see QB development at the high school level, at all. Their game simply doesn't require a passing QB having to make the same decisions.

I believe it's even more evidenced by looking around at other schools and seeing their QB development and the number they have on their depth chart/roster.

It's so ironic that the term "game manager" was a bad thing but now we're looking at more than half of the teams in this conference that would kill to have a game manager on their roster.

I HATE making this comparison but it holds true. J Winston threw how many INT's over the last two seasons? 28. Yet, there's a national title and only one loss due to the talent he had around him.

Granted, he did have to make some plays in some games. But, he also made some bone headed mistakes while making those plays.

Mariotta didn't make those mistakes but where has that got the Oregon program?

Bottom line: A lot of questions but none that aren't shared by the majority of the teams the Tide will face. If the fretting that followed the WVU game didn't cause people to pause ... don't know what will.

I'll remain cautiously optimistic.

Play cards are in use

The staff visited three or four teams this past summer to see how they were handling this. I know TCU and Kansas were two ... memory fails on the other one or two I heard about this morning.

Saban said the signs resulted from meetings with coaches from Ohio State, TCU and others who use no-huddle offenses. The idea was to minimize communication

"We felt like last year we were kind of learning how to be a no-huddle team on the run because of the personnel we had," Saban said. "We thought it was best suited for Blake (Sims), and we've talked about that many times before, but we didn't go in with the idea that we were going to be a no-huddle team.

"So we visited a lot of people during the offseason to try and come up with the best system – Kansas, Washington, a lot of people that go no-huddle ― It's just a methodology of how some people get formations and plays in the game."
Here's an article by Casagrande covering this in more detail.

Catch any fish this weekend? Heading back out today, or are y'all alreay breaking camp?

Oh gosh, yeah. I'm keeping a 14 Blue Catfish I have to clean to throw in the freezer today. Probably gave away another 10 or so I thought were good size and threw a few back. Snagged three that fell in the "limit" category. I didn't keep any of those. It's my opinion when they get too big they need to go back.

Broke down my camping equipment last night ... training a new girl on the books at the bar so I had to be back here this morning. Scheduled to go back to work tonight (real job) and have to open the bar for the next two or three days.

Great week!! Best of all, the weather has just been ideal. It did get a little warm a few times but there's been a decent enough breeze to keep you from roasting when we've been on the water.

Adding a casual observation here for a second ...

Over the past few months we've all talked about the running back depth chart and how an injury or two could really hurt this teams' success.

In the scrimmage yesterday, we know Drake didn't play. There were reports of about a dozen or so runs from the backs, but none about sending a back out of the backfield on a passing route, etc.

It seems to me if there's worry about how injuries at the running back position could really hurt this fall that should also be taken into account when the offense sputtered yesterday. Pardon the pun, but none of the QB's were playing with a "full deck." In a sense, it's much like how Blake was limited in what he could do last year at A-day.

They did alittle bit of two min drill, but it almost went better than no pressure times. Weird right?

This entire scrimmage was about passing, the runs were all up the middle and basic. Drake will be fine and will participate in this coming Saturdays scrimmage.

Quick blurb about the OL, my predictions are from OL coaches and sources close to the OL. They think Mario finally has his group and they will be good. One semi weakness is Dom Jackson and Pass Pro but he is an absolute road grader at runs. He will get better.

@Crimson Boz, Anything on the field goal
kicking from Saturday? Thanks for all the updates.

Griff missed several shorter field goals and nailed a 50 yarder. So I dunno his deal. He has every since the main injury pulled the ball left and and way. His follow through is jacked, he may be used to compensation for pain and that motion stuck.
