Statue plans for Tide Heisman winners 'in early stages'

The already-crowded Walk of Champions could potentially see some new additions, according to Alabama Director of Athletics Bill Battle.

Plans are in the works for statues of Heisman Trophy-winning running backs Mark Ingram and Derrick Henry to join the Crimson Tide's five championship-winning coaches in the shadows of Bryant-Denny Stadium.

"We're working on a project and a plan that we hope to complete soon, and we hope to take it to the Board and the President," Battle said in a statement released by Alabama Athletics. "But, at this time, this is in the early stages."

Ingram won the program's first Heisman in 2009 before the first national championship of Nick Saban's tenure. Henry won the coveted award this past season after becoming the conference's single-season leading rusher.

Where the Heisman winners will be placed and a timetable for the plan are unclear. Although nothing is official, though, one would assume just like the coaches and Walk of Champions, there will be room for future winners.

Terrific idea, as they were they crowned top player in the country, much like the coach statues that coached a top team. Either the other side of the Walk of Champions or on the other side off Bryant Drive.

As for the fan favorites, that would be a bit much in my eyes. Most of them are celebrated with the Championship plaques and Captains quarters over at Denny Chimes. Not a ton of space unless they can buy the fraternity house right there to create more space. Even if there was more room I think it would be too much and leave a lot of arguement amongst who deserves it.

Yes and no. While the Heisman is "the" trophy in college, it's overwhelmingly won by offensive players. Where do you draw the line? The Bednarik? The Butkus? The Jim Thorpe? The Unitas? The Maxwell? The Outland? The Rimington? The Mackay? At some point it may be a forest of statues. Remember that McLain won the Butkus and his life hasn't been one to idolize lately. Also remember that football is a team sport. A lot of players helped those award winners get there.

I feel the same way. I think it being our first HT winners Bama had, is the reason for this.

I could see adding a portion of the Bryant Museum or in the stadium itself for busts of the Heisman winners but not statues. Too damn Aubie for my tastes.

The trophy's can be seen at the Mal M. Moore Athletic Facility.

i like the idea of busts at the Bryant Museum. maybe by the trophies themselves.

Just the next step in this arms race of recruiting to impress recruits . I hate to sound like the old man screaming " get off my lawn " but we should draw the line somewhere, what's next 30 different uniform combinations ?
