2009 Spring Camp Preview- Players to Watch- Offense
March 12, 2009

The Alabama football team opens its spring camp for 2009 tomorrow with drills centering more on conditioning and fundamentals than solving some of the question marks regarding starting positions for the fall football season.

Depending on who you ask you’ll get a different answer on which position is going to be the most scrutinized battle this spring.

Some will be looking to see who fills the shoes of John Parker Wilson at the quarterback position. Others, will be more concerned with Andre’ Smith’s vacated left tackle position. That’s not beginning to approach the discussions on safety, center, right guard on the offense line and a few others.

 The link seems to be broken.

EDIT: Well, go figure...the minute I say something about the link being broken it decides to work for me.

Great stuff!

Thanks for the write up!

One thing I think people should remember (and I'm sure you are aware) is that despite being labeled the #1 center coming out of high school, Jones did not play center in high school. He was re-listed by rivals after Army practice and specifically when he showed he could somewhat slow down Marcus Forston (not an easy thing to do.) He seems like a natural at the position but he really lacks experience (something we'll be dealing with no matter what I guess.) He's got the intelligence, size and feet to dominate at the position though.

Well aware of it. To put it mildly, I'm a bit of a Barrett Jones fan. Same goes for his brother for that matter...fan of the family! (probably one of the few that's a fan of their next door neighbor as well. :D )

I like Barrett in that center position. But, I can't discount the lower body strength that WV brings and love how quick he is as well.

Honestly, I put Cardwell in just because people are going to be asking about him. But, I don't expect a lot out of him. I hope he proves me wrong. I really do.

Great stuff as always. ;tr

Gonna be one of the most interesting spring practices in the last years. A lot of feedback and reports to take a look and some experiments or another...

I like how it looks that incoming spring!! :P

RTR,

I agree with you Terry. It very well be that WV and BJ run 1 and 2 while EC gets pushed to the back burner. WV looks so strong in the lower body and cat quick off the ball.

I'm a fan as well. I think the guy is going to have an incredible career. Never met his neighbor though. haha. I actually think Cardwell, if he's healthy could be decent, but I can also see him slipping off the map. And yeah, William has tree trunks for legs. It's inhuman. If Vlachos can perform it would be nice to have them both on the line. I think BJ is one of the guys we just have to get on the field.
