There are plenty of D 1 players in the state of Mississippi and surrounding area to support 3 teams. I wish the team well as they try to make the best of a difficult situation.

Hopson had issues with the administration over the years and that probably lead to this. From the desire to hire Art Briles that the administration denied that he also went public with about his displeasure, to the recruiting of a player who was charged with raping some women at knifepoint without disclosing the previous issue to the administration, Southern Miss is probably better off without him.

Just to echo the post above he had poisoned the well. Many folks over in the ‘Sip thought his outspoken support of Briles was very unseemly. Yeah they let him call it a resignation but it was a firing in all but name. Losing a home game to a team that hadn’t won a road game in almost 4 yrs just gave them the final bullet

The rumor that he was going to be dismissed was everywhere before he even set foot on the bus after the game against South. Still, it's gotta be a bad an untenable situation to step down/be forced out after just 1 game during a pandemic when every school is looking in the student union couch cushions for spare change to keep the athletic department funded. No idea what the buyout or what remained owed on his contract, but yikes.
