Like Alabama, Southern Cal has yet to name a starting quarterback.
The game may not be until Sept. 3, but Southern Cal offensive coordinator Tee Martin is well aware of Alabama linebacker Tim Williams.
Perhaps Martin watched Alabama's A-Day game over the weekend. In the spring game, Williams, who had 10.5 sacks last season, registered a pair of sacks but wreaked havoc on a defense-dominated day.
"He's a great player," said Martin, who joined The Opening Kickoff on WNSP-FM 105.5 on Thursday in Mobile, Alabama. "We're excited about the opportunity."
Martin, a Mobile native who led Tennessee to the national title, joked he wasn't going to give any "bulletin board material."
"He's phenomenal," he said. "Obviously, you have to have a plan for him. In our league, there are guys like that, but not exactly like him. He's pretty special. It's a great opportunity for our guys in the first game.
"That's about all you're going to get today."
Martin did say the Trojans have already started preparations for the defending national champions.
Like Alabama, USC has yet to name a starting quarterback.
Just this week, Southern Cal coach Clay Helton announced his decision to extend the competition Monday.
"We're still in a battle," Martin explained. "A really good battle. It's a good problem to have."
The race is between redshirt junior Max Browne and redshirt freshman Sam Darnold.
"Both were over 75 percent completion through the spring," Martin said. "Both of the took care of the ball, running the offense. ... We have confidence in both guys."
Martin is in his hometown this week to be inducted into the Mobile Sports Hall of Fame's 28th overall class.
Alabama and Southern Cal meet Sept. 3 at AT&T Stadium in Arlington.
