Courtney Upshaw update

I know there is already a thread on him but I thought it would be better to start a new thread so this wouldn't get lost

TUSCALOOSA - University of Alabama linebacker Courtney Upshaw will not be suspended from the team in the wake of a verbal altercation with a girlfriend that police say became physical, a source close to the football program said.
Both Upshaw, 19, and his girlfriend, University of Alabama student Kendall Lynn Grzyb, 19, were arrested Wednesday night by a University of Alabama police officer who said he witnessed the two arguing and then fighting near the student recreation center.

Alabama coach Nick Saban has not yet issued an official statement. He is scheduled to meet with the news media following this afternoon's practice.

A source close to the Alabama football program said Upshaw will be disciplined internally instead of being suspended for any games.

:headscratch: Yeah I'm pretty sure there are plenty of football players out there not getting arrested for domestic violence, that would represent Alabama football just fine.

I'm curious. What would you do if a girl you were dating walked up and beotch slapped you when you were talking with another female? Or, better yet, when you tried to talk to her about it she tried to slap you again, and again?

Georgia Washington, Gandhi, and Dr. King were all charged with crimes, which shows us that an arrest alone is not the measure of a man, not the measure of Right vs. Wrong.

In the face of verbal and physical attack, and in the face of a wrongful arrest, what standard would you hold up him to? How many other WRONG ways of handling this did he manager to avoid? What harm came from his selection?

As a citizen, I take no issue. Further, this is one of those times when my status as sports fan does not give me the right to sit in judgement of his personal life.

Seriously, had the Officer simply approached and asked "Is there a problem?" The situation would in all likelihood resolved itself instantly and we would have never heard of it.

Had you and I walked by and he was slapping her, we would have restrained him -- and rightly so. Yet no one did the same to her, so why is he denied that option? You and I restrain, we are good citizens. He restrains, and you and the VOL Nation brand him a bad person.

If violance was his intention, what might her mug shot look like. Her smiling means that He did a lot right.

Guilty or not those were my 1st thoughts too Nate. He could be the finest person on the team, but it's hard to know that by the accusations and arrest. He made a mistake. Unfortunately he doesn't get a do-over in the media and in the perception of many fans. Domestic violence isn't real "in" right now, so he comes off as a thug even if he is a great guy.

Just another lesson in "be careful who you hang around". If he is all that Saban says then he needs to choose his friends/girlfriends more carefully. Just an unfortunate situation no matter how it breaks down. The University of Alabama is guilty no matter what happens from here. The media will never run the "rest of the story" if there is one.

I awlays love how everyone over reacts to anything involving a UA player. He's what 19? And his girlfiend is 19 also. Sounds like a couple of kids having a stupid argument because she got jealous when he was talking to another girl.

We arent talking about a husband battering and abusing a wife like you see on Cops or like my buddy that is a police officer here in Atlanta tells us about. I've heard different accounts, but it seems like he was trying to talk to her as she stormed off. Sure he should have just let her go and deal with it later.

Anyway it is amazing how everyone on these message boards seems to never have done nothing wrong and critizes college aged children for mistakes. None of us are perfect for sure. We all did stupid things when we were young. Some of us learned our lessons, and were luckily not caught by the law.

* Im not talking about someone selling drugs or using guns or worse.

Well said. I'd add what Coach said also about the players basically being in a fish bowl. They do anything and it's on ESPN. If this was any other student not one hair on a nats @$$ would have been raised. This issue really needs to go away because there is nothing to it.

been there done that.. I smiled at her and walked away and I never spoke to her again. I'm not saying what he did was comparable to rape or murder. I just don't agree with Sabans words.

I agree that it looks a lot less damaging now, but guess what? 90% will never know that. All they see is "University of Alabama football player arrested for domestic violence". As I said earlier there is no "do-over" when you're on a national stage. ESPN and other media outlets love this type stuff. Heck, I think the B'ham News is all giddy about it too. They just sit around waiting for this type stuff.

No matter how you slice it, it's not good PR for Alabama.

And btw to call this case domestic violence is ridiculous, but I didn't write the law. I have a hard time believing every time a cop sees something like this there is an arrest made.

I've never bought into the whole college age students are "children" argument. I don't think you're not supposed to be a "child" at 18 years old. You're a man or a woman. Young? Inexperienced? Of course, but you're still an adult.

I do agree that it's a black eye for Bama. The perception is that you're guilty if you're arrested. It really doesn't matter if you're really guilty or not.

I'm just ready for some football. :hyper:

I dunno maybe I'm over sensitive after seeing the damage it can do to children. I have a very low tolerance for crap like that.
