how in the heck the University of Alabama rowing team is in the big 12 conference.

How many schools in the SEC sponsor rowing, specifically women's rowing? It's a varsity sport at Alabama but they need to belong somewhere.

Some sports at some schools belong to different conferences, especially smaller schools or less popular sports.

The rowing team moved from CUSA to the Big12 within the last few years.

It's not a SEC sport (sanctioned, I guess is the right word?)

Its an NCAA sport. Tennessee is the only other SEC school involved at the NCAA level. They used to participate in C-USA but then they basically combined with the B12.

This was announced two years ago, Rowing to Compete in Big 12 Championships Starting in 2015.

Sorta related, the Big XII's gymnastics tournament was in Frisco, TX a month ago or so. What caught my attention, Denver was in the Big XII Championship event...had no idea Denver joined the Big XII for gymnastics. That is when I also realized that there are only 4 universities competing in gymnastics in the Big XII (Iowa State, Oklahoma, West Virginia, and Denver).

There are so many sports that Alabama doesn't include. Men's or Women's Water Polo, Wrestling, Bowling, Women's Field Hockey, Men's Hockey (although they have a pretty good club team at the school), Women's Hockey, Men's Gymnastics, Men's Soccer, Men's or Women's Lacrosse. It's one of the reasons why Alabama never wins the Capital One Cup and Stanford wins it repeatedly.
