Mal Moore from rivals.com on the vacant spot for the statue.

ā€œIt was put there for this and I will recommend to the president that we go forth,ā€ said athletics director Mal Moore about adding Nick Saban after Thursday’s 37-21 victory to secure the program’s 13th title.
Immediately?

ā€œYeah. Hell yeah,ā€ he said.

ā€œIt is really difficult to express just how proud I am,ā€ Moore also said. ā€œThis team, these coaches and in particular coach Saban, the effort he’s put into this program in the three years he’s been here, and to reach this level and this peek, and win the national championship, is quite remarkable. I think it’s just so fitting that we were honored to play in the Rose Bowl for the national championship and win it here.ā€

I could be wrong, but I could have sworn someone asked Mal about this last year and he said that no statues would be erected until the coach’s tenure at Alabama had ended. I guess he’s changed his mind about that? <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

Yeah, I've wondered about this myself.

I believe that Saban's goal in coming back to college is to improve upon what he did at LSU. They did win one NC there in Baton Rouge, but they were hardly considered a dynasty, and I believe that's what he wants at Alabama. He knew all the other things were in place already; fanbase, facilities, precedent for repeated success. Alabama was a one-of-a-kind job, comparable only to a Notre Dame, Michigan, or perhaps USC. He wants to build a dynasty here. His quest for a repeat next year will be relentless.

So, I say all that to say this: Saban might not allow that statue to be erected just yet. It's the ultimate ego move. Usually, an ego that large would jump at the opportunity to be immortalized in bronze, but he wants to one-up what he did at LSU first, and perhaps even what other coaches at Alabama have done. Of course, 6 national titles with Saban already at his age is probably unrealistic. But he wants to be mentioned alongside Bryant, Bowden, Paterno, et al, and to do that he needs a dynasty run.
