šŸˆ Slive: Time has come to address scholarships covering full costs of college

College sports appears willing to seriously consider something long overdue. Big Ten Commissioner Jim Delany wants to consider providing scholarships that cover the actual cost of attendance, and he wants to talk about this with other leagues, many of which are interested in the dialogue.

The NCAA grant-in-aid formula leaves the annual scholarship shortfall between $200 and $10,962 per athlete depending on the school, according to a 2009 study by Ithaca College and the National College Players Association. The average scholarship shortfall was $2,951 a year, or $14,755 over five years.

This doesn't come as a shock to me, at all. I know several players that have worked over the summertime because they couldn't afford to be in T-town in the summer.

Now, this came as a BIG shock to me.

For instance, the 2009 study revealed a full scholarship athlete at Arkansas-Little Rock is expected to pay almost $55,000 out of pocket over five years. There's no way the Arkansas-Little Rock's could survive with their current economic model if they had to cover additional costs.

Several years ago I saw the numbers of how much money it cost the state to support UAB...along with how much money UAB was losing in football alone. Then, and to this very second, I believe their sports programs should be either shut down or moved down.

A "full-ride", as we were all told was the case growing up is apparently not the case. And yet the number of schools moving up increases each year it seems. An injustice beyond sustained...expanded.

Perhaps this is the catalyst for the breakaway of the honesly elite schools, the ones who can/will pay more -- how much more is a whole nother can of worms. This break away could open the door for rewritting many other wrongs in the game.

Here's LBS throughing out his interesting again in having a system like the British Soccer (Football) League - the Premire League - where winning keeps you in and losing bumps you down to the minors in favor of the best of that level getting a shot at the bigs.

Terry, don't get me started on UAB.

I know that it is not uncommon for scholarship athletes to be eligible for and receive Pell Grants. In this era of billions in TV money for football and basketball I think their stipend should at least be enough so that they are not forced from necessity to apply nor are eligible for these grants.

There are way to many teams in D1A (or FBS, whichever) that do not belong. I would almost go out on a limb and say that 50% the teams that are currently D1A/FBS should be moved down. My second favorite team after Alabama is Troy. As much as I like Troy, they are border line as to where they belong or not. They do win their conference pretty regular, have good crowds, and I'm pretty sure they opperate in the black, but it is still close.
