Six Flags Over Georgia makes good on friendly bet following College Football National Championship

(WTVM) -
Six Flags Over Georgia is honoring its bet with an Alabama amusement park.

The bet was that if the University of Georgia lost the College Football National Championship, the park would temporarily rename the Georgia Scorcher roller coaster, the ā€œAlabama Scorcherā€ and have some of the park staff dressed in University of Alabama t-shirts for opening weekend.

Had the University of Georgia won the National Championship, Alabama Splash Adventure would have renamed their Rampage ride, the Georgia Rampage and had some of their staff don UGA shirts.

In addition to the wager, the park debuted the historic wooden coaster, The Great American Scream Machine, running backward for a limited time.

I'm assuming they don't mean it ran the track backwards, but the cars were backwards? In its regular setting that first drop is a breath-stealer. I can't image it backwards.

Tried that years ago. I love rollercoasters and been riding the scream machine since they built it. With hands up, it's impossible to brace for curves and dips on the track. Still was fun, but it will give you a headache.

It was built in the early '70's. I didn't think you were that old.

After reading a bit ... nope, ain't gonna think about riding.

  • A heart-pounding 105 foot climb backward while staring straight down at the ground
  • The terrifying and unsuspecting drop down nearly 10 stories backward
  • Speeds of 57 miles per hour around tight curves backward
  • More than 3,800 feet of track racing along the banks of the Chattahoochee River backward.

Yep, if my memory serves me right, I believe those mining cars was the first installment of the rollercoasters. Maybe somebody knows when that was. I believe sometime in the mid 90's they decided to run the scream machine backward that summer. Tell you the truth, with your hands up it was like riding with your eyes closed. If you can't at least lean and roll, those things will throw your neck out. Didn't do it twice.
