it's still an ongoing investigation.

Before you ask - when has the NCAA moved quickly unless there was very little, or nothing, there?

From ESPN today:

The NCAA has combined its investigations of two former USC star athletes into a single probe of the Trojans' athletic program, the Los Angeles Times reported. In separate investigations, the NCAA has been looking into allegations that Heisman Trophy winner Reggie Bush and NBA lottery pick O.J. Mayo both received improper benefits while at USC.

Time To Worry?

The attorneys for Louis Johnson, a former associate of Mayo, said that in a meeting with a Pacific 10 Conference executive, they were told that the NCAA had combined the two probes into a larger investigation of whether USC had shown a lack of institutional control, according to the Times.
"It makes sense," attorney Anthony V. Salerno said, according to the Times. "The NCAA looks at the program as a whole, and you may be talking about systemic problems in these cases of payments by agents. Yes, these were different teams and coaches. Rather than do it piecemeal, look at the institution."
Salerno and David Murphy represent Johnson, a former associate of Mayo and Rodney Guillory, who Johnson says received more than $200,000 in cash and gifts from a representative of the BDA Sports Management agency and passed along some of those gifts to Mayo.
Bush is alleged to have accepted thousands of dollars in benefits for himself and his family in the form of rent owed on a home owned by a would-be sports marketer.
Both athletes have said they did nothing wrong.
The NCAA and a Pac-10 investigator declined to comment, while Pac-10 commissioner Tom Hanson could not be reached for comment, the Times reported.
USC basketball coach Tim Floyd said he hasn't talked to the NCAA since May and has "never, ever heard" that the investigations were being combined, the Times reported. Football coach Pete Carroll could not be reached for comment, according to the report.

The NCAA's merging of the Reggie Bush and O.J. Mayo probes could point at the dreaded "lack of institutional control" finding, writes Ted Miller in his Blog

It would be nice to see the NCAA slap it to someone that has been given free reign since Pete Carroll came to town. The whole Bush and Mayo incidents have been long overdue to bring the hammer down on them.

If penalties and probation was handed down, I would assume the Pete Carroll "legacy" at USC would be over.

The infamous "lack of institutional control" is a sure death sentence for a college coach. IMO if the NCAA has something coming for USC, then I would not be surprised to see Pete Carroll get the Heck out of Dodge and go to the NFL one more time. Pad his bank account and in 6-8 years be remembered fondly among the USC alum. Heck they have OJ as an alum, Pete would be a saint when it comes to fond memories.

Well personally i'm hoping the NCAA give USC the one finger death touch.
that will solve that problem.....

Urban will leave the Gay-tors after this year for ND cause Wiess has one foot on a bananna peel and the other in the grave. Not to mention that Urban won't have Mr. Gay Pride himself Tim Teabag after this season.
So Florida won't be a big deal after this year.....

Leaves only Tex, the Chuck-eyes & OU to fight off for the NC.

Yes i honestly think Tebow is gay. Remember the CBS sideline video form YOUTube? ever seen him with a female....not related to him? I rest my case.

so looks like Floyd resigned yesterday...

"Unfortunately, I no longer feel I can offer the level of enthusiasm to my duties that is deserved by the university, my coaching staff, my players, their families, and the supporters of Southern Cal. I always promised my self and my family that if I ever felt I could no longer give my full enthusiasm to a job, that I should leave it to others who could. I intend to contact my coaching staff and my players in coming days and weeks to tell them how much each of them means to me. I wish the best to USC and to my successor."

With the talent and schedule ND has this year, I couldn't lose enough to get fired. And I've never coached a down of football in my life.

I don't think USC will get more than a slap on the wrist. They are in too big of a market like Notre Dame. The ncaa is afraid of hitting them too hard. Just my opinion.....

I think there's probably a lot of truth to your statements. If they slap them too hard, they get attacked by the left coast media, if they don't, they lose more credibility amongst everyone else. They'll likely compromise and slap them just hard enough to appease the rest of the country while not hard enough to tick off the LA media. It's a real shame the NCAA isn't consistent with punishment. I have zero respect for them and would love to see them go the way of the dinosaurs.

not good for USC...

All I have to say is, it's about freaking time they do something about Reggie Bush.

They might do something about him, but they can't/won't do anything to him. That's the real shame. The only people that ever win and get off scott-free in these situations is the athletes themselves.

And if recent history is any indication, the NCAA will have little if any luck getting info or testimony on anything from Bush. Once they're out of school the NCAA's jurisdiction is finished. Unless by chance, there are say, some sort of federal charges involve which would give the NCAA the ability to turn it into a criminal matter. They've tried once to speak with him and he told them to go jump in a lake, and they did. A few years ago when they were investigating the Clarett case (which was merely a dog and pony show designed to make the NCAA look credible) they tried contacting Clarett at the Combine he wouldn't answer his cell phone so they had to drop the case due to lack of cooperation.

Did the NCAA really try that hard to contact Clarett? Doubt it. Is there a bit of truth in the statement that the case had to be dropped due to lack of cooperation? I suspect so.

In Bush's case there is still the pending lawsuit. If he settles out of court, that testimony won't be heard. IF the cases does make it to court you can bet Johanningmeir will be all over those testimonies and depositions.

I know most of USC's basketball recruits have now decommitted, so i get the feeling there about to get the hammer

I was told almost a month ago that the Ath. Dept was getting word to their boosters to expect some punishment.

Floyd "resigning" is interesting in the light of it could be USC is planning on letting their basketball program take the fall for the entire situation.

In past cases where investigations have been combined we've seen one program get hammered while the money making program continues.

Considering how recently Myles Brand has said that revenues need to increase it very well may play into their football programs favor.

Before you make a judgment based on that, consider this.

The SEC's deal with ESPN and CBS have weight in the NCAA's ruling.

I'd also be willing to bet if Shula were still the coach our penalties would be harder than they are with Saban now.
