🏈 Sims and his shoulder

I was cringing on the play. It could have been so much worse. Broken collarbone, separated shoulder, stinger. All of those would have meant missing games or even the rest of the season. Work on that slide, Blake. Take what you can get and get out of bounds.

I too cringed when he rolled over. Initially, I was hoping for having the wind knocked out of him. Then, broken collarbone, torn rotator cuff, separation, etc. started running through my mind.
The torn rotator idea really scared me. I tore mine during my senior season. We went from throwing it around 20-25 times a game. to about 10 times a game. It hurt to throw the ball beyond 10 yards!! Dr. Lemak gave me a choice, rehab and don't throw beyond 10yds or throw deeper and he would cut on me. I had several schools interested but all but BAMA backed off when they learned of my injury. Coach Jim Fuller told me to come walk on and if my shoulder improved, a scholly would be possible.

This bye week could not have come at a better time. Thank goodness it's only a bruised shoulder. I too was VERY concerned that the news was going to be so much worse. When Blake was down, the first thing that ran through my mind was Prothro. There is something about home games against Florida and terrible injuries. 2005 was Prothro. 2010, G Mac suffered a concussion and never was quite right the rest of that season. I really like the fact that every team gets two bye weeks per season now.

I was worried too, the only hope I have is I doubt they would have sent him back out had it been even a mild separation (though would they have known that quick?). I would assume after he was in some pain trying to throw on the sideline, he went and got a shot in the locker room. Just hope it is as minor as possible though. Those injuries tend to linger, and if it is weakened, it will lead to more bad stuff if/when he lands on it again.

I watched the replay tonight on ESPNU, and you could see Sims waive off throwing on the sideline before he headed into the locker room, I'm guessing too painful. An exam and X-ray would show if the shoulder was separated, but it wouldn't show if it had gone out and back in, potentially tearing or stretching ligaments and cartilage. Typically, an MRI is required for that. Exam would've/could've suggested if the shoulder was stable.

I believe it will bother him for some time, and if he keeps getting hit on it he will be at risk. I think it's been said that Alabama conceals injuries better than most teams. AJ's shoulder was damaged in the latter part of last season, hanging the ball on long throws was the best example of that. After his first game throwing it deep a number of times, I'd hate to see that wane due to an injury.

Tim

Yes, on some things, usually things that are more obvious anyway, Saban is actually very honest with reporters on injuries. On others, things that the media/fans don't pick up on, they are the best at hiding it. Especially if it involves the QB, which is why I'm somewhat concerned. They did put him back in though, and if it was worse than advertised, he deserves an award for the post-game interview. He handled that well.
