💬 Shannon Terry, founder of Rivals/ 247Sports: Back in the business with some great hires. On3sports

Never heard of the Forrest guy or the 900 service. But with $15MM a year in revenues from just the one company, evidently there are gobs of Americans that value following the back and forth of these kids picking schools more than the money in their pocket. lol I prefer my money!
There are some guys out there that put content out that's worth paying for: a few that are Bama related. I don't subscribe to any right now for recruiting news given it's pretty easy to come by.

Each site has a benefit, don't get me wrong. The Athletic, in its earliest stages, had a lot of potential.

I find this interesting not only because of the writers he's pulled in as he launches but his history with sports related sites. In case you didn't know this, before he sold 247Sports to CBS he sold the Rivals network to Yahoo! He's good at this.

How many of you guys will be grabbing your debit cards and lining up to register?
I can't remember when I was paying for a subscription site other than it was when I was in Tuscaloosa...a sign up a friend kind of thing over on TI.

Let's see how much of their database is easily accessible.

About

The Best of College Sports and Recruiting.

The premier college sports and recruiting digital media company, featuring the most talented and experienced newsbreakers and storytellers, partnered with iconic fan publications and featuring a next-gen database tracking players from high school to the draft. From the founders of Rivals.com and 247Sports.com

Mission

Our goal at On3 is to be the college sports destination for the fans who love not just the games but the spectacle that distinguishes college football and basketball from the other major American sports. On3 will explore and highlight the emotional ties to team, to school, to autumn Saturdays and sold-out arenas that make college sports so appealing.

On3 will cover college sports from the end of the eighth grade to the minute that Roger Goodell (or Adam Silver) walks to the lectern to begin the draft. We will try to capture the wonder of college sports and recruiting, both the wonderment (How did that player do that?) and the wonder aloud (Why did that coach do that?).

We want On3 to be the voice trusted by fans from College Park to College Station, from Boulder to Rocky Top. The staff we are assembling will bring a considerable amount of talent and experience to our readers, all with the mission to become synonymous with national and team college sports.

The How

On3 combines three unique businesses into one company.

National News

On3 not only will tell its readers what happened in the world of intercollegiate athletics, but why it happened and what it means. We are assembling a staff of national and regional writers and reporters that will combine experience and youth, storytelling as well as digging.

Fan publications and sites

On3 builds, licenses and acquires fan publications and team sites that capture the passion and voice of the fan through local, team-based coverage. These iconic team-based brands, combined with recognizable insiders, create an engaged community that capture the essence of college sports.

Database (On3 db)

I'm left shaking my head here but it's not the first time I've seen "questionable" hires on his part.

In case you missed the story OMSpirit used to be a part of the 247Sports/CBS Interactive network. One of their recruiting beat reporters, Yancy Porter, has recently given us yet another example of "fake news."

Porter claimed to have interviewed a QB recruit, Devin Brown, going as far as making up a quote from him in one of his articles. Brown came out quickly stating he'd never spoken with Porter. In an effort to 'deflect' attention from the story Porter claimed he'd received the quote via a third party source. Brown came out again and said he'd never spoken to either writer.

Fast forward a few hours and OMSpirit losses its relationship with CBS Interactive. Within a few days On3 has picked up the site.

Bottom line? Porter made up a story, got caught, and On3 sweeps in and picks up the trash, literally. I thought On3 picking up Jefferey Lee to cover Auburn was digging up the dregs of the industry. I hoped, in a sense, it was an anomoly. Now? Not so much.

There are still some great writers there; some solid information on football, recruiting, etc. But I have to say it's a tarnished product "just out of the bottle."

Think he's like apparel company Fanatics and just trying to gobble up the marketplace to bring in revenue? I started following them on Instagram over the Summer and a lot of what they put on there is just "breaking" news (stuff that hits ESPN, Yahoo, and Google at the same time) and scores.

In all fairness at that point they were still building their database, ranking last year's class, and starting to add on team sites. I wouldn't say they had anything close to be called a "staff" at that point other than on the IT side.

I don't know what the intro offer is for OMSpirit. For the network it's $10 for the first year so there's 25K they banked on the 'takeover.'
