🏈 Senior Bowl 1st Day Practice Notes

* Alabama TE Colin Peek dropped a catchable ball in 7-on-7's but then came back a few plays later and redeemed himself with a nice grab.

* Nick Saban was on hand at practice and he noted to a fellow observer that Alabama OG Mike Johnson is a "good player".

* Alabama CB Javier Arenas isn't real big but he is awfully feisty and physical.

* Alabama K Leigh Tiffin missed a couple of very easy kicks near the end of practice but quickly turned it around.

I saw the photo, 370lbs is large. Read an article that Cody wouldn't tell Saban how much he weighed, apparently Saban guessed 368 (off by 2lbs) - not sure how legit it is.

Anybody that thought Cody would be 'pretty' needs their brain examined anyway. He's 360+ pounds, he aint supposed to be pretty.

I saw a video clip of Saban from yesterday. He says he guessed 368 after seeing TC front and back.

My point being that he looked like he was carrying a few "loose" pounds close to the armpits ala Andre Smith.

It is disappointing that two years running we have had one of our more high profile linemen enter the draft looking more like a sack of marshmellows than is productive.

One has to wonder if Cody and Andre Smith might have been truly dominant at the level of true greatness if they had put forth a little more effort in the conditioning program and shown a little more discipline at the dinner table. The two were damn good as it is, but what could their ceiling truly have been otherwise.

That said, Mike Johnson did himself well.

He'll be the first Alabama senior drafted if things stay the same. Roy Upchurch will be the next senior taken I think after that.

I would imagine Roy will be a late round pick.

My brother-in-law was there and watched about 20 minutes of practice. He met Coach Saban and said that he was extremely friendly to all of the fans. He also commented that until you see Cody up close, you really have no idea just how gigantic he really is. Finally, he commented that Tebow, indeed looked awful. He said his throwing accuracy was way off and that he looked clumsy.

Turning on Cody? I'm not turning on anybody. He did indeed come to Bama at 400 lbs, but our coaching staff and several other people have told him where his weight needed to be. All you have to do to maintain your weight is hard work, so if me saying it's hard to root for a guy that doesn't appear to put in the hard work to maintain his weight then I guess I am turning on him.

I forgot about Javy. He'll get drafted after Ro. Then Upchurch. Tiffin will be last one drafted I think.

He looks pretty dang good when he is playing on your team or blocking field goals.

Cody still has some time to get in better shape before the combine. I heard a guy the other day say that the biggest leap he and other players took physically was during the time between their last game and the combine. He said it's really important to get the right trainer and immerse yourself in the regimen. I think that's what cheesed everyone last year with Smith. He didn't seem to take the combine seriously, and it showed.

The only note about a Bama player from yesterday....

* Alabama NT Terrence Cody is an immovable object in the middle. Stamina is a concern and he isn't explosive but when it comes to natural strength and holding ground at the point of attack few stand out more than "Mount Cody". When Cody gets into his stance it's almost like a scene from a movie, where the big, nasty football player lines up in slow motion with a menacing look on his face Say what you want about Cody but there is just no denying that he is a very unique prospect.
