| FTBL SEC Football by the Numbers: Consensus All-Americans -- Jones and Jones again (updated)

Alabama C Barrett Jones and Georgia LB Jarvis Jones have joined a short list of SEC players who have earned consensus All-American status twice.

The NCAA compiles a consensus All-American team for its annual record book, using a point system to determine the best of the best from the major selectors to produce a definitive All-American squad for each season.

The major All-American selectors used in this process have changed over the years. The current group consists of the teams named by the American Football Coaches Association, Associated Press, Football Writers Association of America, The Sporting News and Walter Camp Football Foundation.

Alabama has four consensus All-Americans in 2012, and the SEC has tied the league record with 10 consensus selections. The conference first had 10 consensus All-Americans in 2009, when Alabama had a league-record five.

Barrett Jones was a consensus All-American at offensive tackle last season, and he made it again this year even though he switched to center on the Alabama offensive line. He joins DE Leroy Cook in 1974 and 1975 and DL Terrence Cody in 2008 and 2009 as Alabama's only two-time consensus All-Americans.

Jones is the sixth Alabama player to be the consensus All-American center. The others are Joe Domnanovich in 1942, Vaughn "Cisco" Mancha in 1945, Lee Roy Jordan in 1962, Paul Crane in 1965 and Antoine Caldwell in 2008.

Jarvis Jones is the fifth Georgia player to be a consensus All-American more than one. The only player in SEC history to be a consensus All-American three times is Bulldogs RB Herschel Walker, who did so in 1980, 1981 and 1982. Georgia's other two-time consensus All-Americans are HB Frank Sinkwich in 1941 and 1942, DB Terry Hoage in 1982 and 1983 and DE David Pollack in 2002 and 2004.
Jones is the first player in Georgia history to be a consensus All-American at linebacker.

The SEC's other two-time consensus All-Americans have been Arkansas OL Shawn Andrews in 2002-03 and RB Darren McFadden in 2006-07, Auburn RB Bo Jackson in 1983 and 1985 and DL Tracy Rocker in 1987-88, Florida LB Wilber Marshall in 1982-83 and LB Brandon Spikes in 2008-09, Kentucky QB Babe Parilli in 1950-51 and T Lou Michaels in 1956-57, LSU E Gaynell Tinsley in 1935-36, HB Billy Cannon in 1958-59, DB Tommy Casanova in 1970-71 and RB Charles Alexander in 1977-78; and Tennessee LB Steve Kiner in 1968-69, G Chip Kell in 1969-70, E Larry Seivers in 1975-76, DL John Henderson in 2000-01 and S Eric Berry in 2008-09.

Unanimous All-Americans and near misses

Jarvis Jones was a unanimous All-American this season. A unanimous All-American is a player who makes the first team for all five major selectors.

The SEC had five unanimous All-Americans this year, with Alabama cornerback Dee Milliner and guard Chance Warmack, South Carolina defensive end Jadeveon Clowney and Texas A&M offensive tackle Luke Joeckel joining Jarvis Jones.

With Warmack and Barrett Jones, Alabama becomes the second SEC team to have two offensive interior linemen who were consensus All-Americans in the same season. The first team to do that was the Alabama squad of 2008 with Caldwell and OT Andre Smith.
Barrett Jones was not a unanimous All-American because the AFCA selected Clemson's Dalton Freeman as its first-team center. The other four major selectors had Jones on their first teams.

Alabama's other consensus All-American also missed being a unanimous All-American by one team. Linebacker C.J. Mosley of Theodore was not a first-team selection of the FWAA. The one first-team linebacker spot that was not filled by Mosley, Jarvis Jones or Notre Dame's Manti Te'o went to Kansas State's Arthur Brown.

Mosley becomes the eighth Alabama player to be a consensus All-American specifically at linebacker, joining Woodrow Lowe in 1974, Cornelius Bennett in 1986, Derrick Thomas in 1988, Keith McCants in 1989, DeMeco Ryans in 2005, Rolando McClain in 2009 and Dont'a Hightower in 2011.

Heisman Trophy winner Johnny Manziel wasn't a unanimous All-American either. The Texas A&M QB was not a first-team selection by the AFCA, which picked Clemson's Tajh Boyd.

Manziel is the SEC's ninth consensus All-American quarterback. The SEC's other consensus All-American QBs have been Auburn's Pat Sullivan in 1971, LSU's Bert Jones in 1972, Florida's Danny Wuerrfel in 1996, Tennessee's Peyton Manning in 1997, Kentucky's Tim Couch in 1998, Florida's Rex Grossman in 2001 Florida's Tim Tebow in 2007 and Auburn's Cam Newton in 2010. Of those players, only Sullivan was a unanimous selection. (Other SEC quarterbacks have been consensus All-Americans, but they earned their honors when the team had four backs not differentiated by position.)

Multiple All-Americans

This year's Alabama squad becomes the fourth SEC team to have at least four consensus All-Americans in the same season. It's also the second year in a row that Alabama has had four, with Barrett Jones, Hightower, S Mark Barron and RB Trent Richardson earning that recognition in 2011. The Crimson Tide set the conference record with five consensus All-Americans in 2009 -- Cody, McClain, CB Javier Arenas, RB Mark Ingram and G Mike Johnson. Florida had four in 2001 -- DL Alex Brown, WR Jabar Gaffney, QB Rex Grossman and OL Mike Pearson.

In its first season in the SEC, Texas A&M joined the list of conference teams with three consensus All-Americans in one year. Texas A&M DE Damontre Moore, who made the first team for three of the major selectors, joins Aggies teammates Joeckel and Manziel. Other SEC teams with three consensus All-Americans are 1934 Alabama, 1996 Florida, 2007 Arkansas, 2008 Alabama, 2009 Florida and 2010 Auburn.

Dominant in the secondary

Milliner and LSU S Eric Reid extend to 10 consecutive seasons the SEC's streak of producing a consensus All-American defensive back.
Like Milliner, Fresno State S Phillip Thomas is a unanimous All-American this season. Oregon State CB Jordan Poyer was a first-team pick for four of the five selectors (missing the FWAA squad). The other six first-team spots in the secondary were evenly divided among three SEC players -- Reid, Mississippi State CB Johnthan Banks and Florida S Matt Elam.

The first hurdle a potential consensus All-American must clear is being a first-team choice for two of the major selectors. That's why there were only three consensus All-American defensive backs last season (all from the SEC), but it left three players in the running for one spot this season.

The AFCA and FWAA had Reid on their first teams, and the WCFF and AP had him on their second teams, giving the LSU safety the spot on points.

Banks, who was a first-teamer for the FWAA and WCFF, was a second-team AP pick. Elam, who was a first-teamer for the AP and TSN, was a second-team WCFF selection.

Milliner and Banks bring to 17 the number of consensus All-American defensive backs that the SEC has produced in the past decade. Those players have been Florida's Keiwan Ratliff in 2003; Georgia's Thomas Davis and Auburn's Carlos Rogers in 2004, Georgia's Greg Blue in 2005, LSU's LaRon Landy and Florida's Reggie Nelson in 2006, LSU's Craig Steltz in 2007, Tennessee's Eric Berry in 2008, Berry, Alabama's Javier Arenas and Florida's Joe Haden in 2009; LSU's Patrick Peterson in 2010, and Alabama's Mark Barron and LSU's Morris Claiborne and Tyrann Mathieu in 2011.

One-timers

Three other SEC players earned first-team selection from one of the big five this season -- Texas A&M OT Jake Matthews (FWAA), Florida DT Sharrif Floyd (TSN) and Florida PK Caleb Sturgis (TSN).
