Tennessee unquestionably was one of the biggest underachievers nationally in 2016, and one SEC assistant coach said Tennessee’s athletic director situation may have saved Jones from being fired.

UT athletic director Dave Hart announced last August that he would be retiring effective June 2017. His replacement, Kansas State AD John Currie, was named earlier this month. An anonymous SEC assistant thinks the instability in the overall program may have helped Jones.

ā€œI think he’s … benefited from that (AD change),ā€ one SEC assistant told 247Sports.com. ā€œIf they had a stable AD, I bet he’s gone. I know a lot of coaches who feel like they’re kind of taking it easy on him. It’s been there for the taking for them. They never took it.ā€

This season, Jones and his revamped staff will have to replace a host of standout players from last season, including quarterback Josh Dobbs, defensive end Derek Barnett, wide receiver Josh Malone, running back Alvin Kamara, cornerback Cam Sutton and linebacker Jalen Reeves-Maybin.

I doubt that anyone wearing orange wanted outgoing AD, Hart, to hire the next head football coach at 10essee. That type of flux had to help butch keep his job at least one more season. As lousy as he is with in-game adjustments it's after the game he does his worst damage with the fans. I listened to his post presser against Bama, SC and Vandy and he will not own a loss. What fans value most after a loss is a little candor, that's when he turns up the volume and gives you double talk and cliches out the wahoo. Dude is just tone deaf.

Jones cracks me up. His post game pressers sound like the interviewer grabbed one of the band members and asked him how the team lost. Oh wait...
