🏈 Scholarship Availability

I saw this posted on another board, and I thought it was interesting. According to this article, we have 7 available scholarships for the 2009 recruiting class. It drew a red flag with me so I was wondering if someone could confirm this.

I was worried about this all of last year, and we wound up having 3 extra schollies that were awarded during fall camp. Saban has a plan, and we'll meet our numbers.

We've already seen indications that Terry Grant will transfer. In October Preyear looked like he'd be coming in January, but he seems to have disappeared from the radar all together since then. Hopefully we won't have any serious discipline issues like we had last year with Elder and Johns, but there were several players on last year's squad who were basically told that their football days were over due to recurring or severe injuries, but were offered "medical" scholarships to complete their education. There will likely be some who want to see PT more than they want to be on our team and will choose to transfer. Hopefully we won't have any academic casualties, but it has been known to happen. I'm not worried about it, but I am interested in seeing it play out.

I think we will see folks take medical leaves from the team and finish their education much like Zeke Knight (which was expected) along with guys like Charles Hoke and Lionel Mithchell did this past year.

After Upchurch's surgery I would not be in the least bit surprised to see him as one of those guys this coming year fall into that category.

I've got all of this on a spread sheet on my laptop at work and meant to email it to myself for this thread...forgot.

Anyway, when I looked at it early this morning, minus the Sr's, my count is 74 going in to fall. 34 on offense, 37 on defense and 3 on special teams.

With the thought that Fitz, King and Leigh don't get theirs renewed b/c is was agreed on that it was a 1 yr deal, that would leave us with 14 to offer in the fall. Getting nine isn't that much of a stretch.
