The first scrimmage came and went Friday afternoon, and the University of Alabama didn't make it out unscathed.
Freshman running back Bo Scarbrough, who might have been counted on to bolster the depth at running back, was carted off the field with a knee injury.
Bo Scarbrough was expected to bolster Alabama's depth at running back.
UA coach Nick Saban the severity of the injury is unknown until full medical tests, including an MRI, are performed to determine whether or not the talented freshman tore his anterior cruciate ligament.
If Scarbrough's injury is serious, that's bad news for Alabama's depth at running back considering running back Tyren Jones was dismissed from the team earlier this week and Altee Tenpenny left the team in January. Combine that with Kenyan Drake returning from a scary broken leg and T.J. Yeldon's recent departure to declare for the NFL Draft, and a one-time strength is now a big-time question mark in regards to depth.
"Bo was doing pretty well, but we've had injuries, suspensions, and lost some people at that position, so what seemed like a pretty strong position for us, depth-wise, has gotten a little thin," Saban said.
Scarbrough rushed for two touchdown's during Friday's scrimmage and a total 36 yards on 16 carries (keep in mind that these statistics incorporate situational drills like goal-line plays).
On a positive note, Derrick Henry led the team with 112 yards on 11 carries and one touchdowns, and Drake is creeping closer to being back fully healthy.
"Kenyan has been able to do everything," Saban said. "He actually ran a 4.4 when we tested right before. I can't say that he's 100 percent, but I think that - the big thing we're trying to do is to get him all the reps we can get him, but not bang him around too much that he has a problem with his ankle and then once we get through the spring he'll have a significant amount of time to be able to get some rest and get in better condition, but he's really done well.
"So those two guys are really good."
