"The preseason S&P+ projections are a simple mix of three factors: recent history, returning production, and recruiting. To come up with 130-team projections for all of FBS, I create projected ratings based on each factor. Here’s how the process works:

  • For recruiting, I create a rating based on these weighted four-year recruiting rankings. The weighting (67 percent this year’s class, 15 percent last year’s, 15 percent the year before that, three percent the year before that) is based on what makes the ratings most predictive.
  • For returning production, I take each team’s returning offensive and defensive production(which are on different scales) and apply projected changes to last year’s ratings. The ranking you see below is not where they rank in returning production but where they would rank after the projected changes are applied to last year’s S&P+ averages. This piece makes up a vast majority of the overall S&P+ projections.
  • For recent history, I’ve found that getting a little weird predicts pretty well. This number isn’t a strict five-year average — last year’s ratings already carry heavy weight from the returning production piece. Instead, what you see below is a projection based solely off of seasons two to five years ago. Recent history doesn’t carry much weight in the projections, but it serves as a reflection of overall program health. We overreact to one year’s performance sometimes."

Bama plays 6 of the Top 30. All in the SEC. Clemson plays 3 of the Top 30. Only one (FSU) in the ACC. The other two are SEC; aTm and SC.

The top three projected teams in each conference:
  • ACC: No. 3 Clemson, No. 19 Miami, No. 28 Florida State
  • SEC: No. 1 Alabama, No. 2 Georgia, No. 4 LSU

Wonder what odds Vegas would give Miami and FSU for being that high at the end of the season? Man, that is getting to be a sorry football conference.

I don’t ever remember ACC being strong....FSU...Miami....absolutely...but the rest......... no....and now it’s Clemson only....while the others regroup... kinda Iike the SEC years ago.......and not really impressed with fsu or Miami changes...so its the Tigers....and playoff teams to challenge them...they may make a really long run into playoffs...exceeding Bamas...and setting the goal high for others...
Dabo has done a great job...can they get to 30 wins in a row ( have 15....13 games next year including ACC Championship game...have to win 2 playoff games...and 2020 wouldgive them a legit shot at Oks record)....

To break OU's record, Clemson would have to have a 3-peat. That ain't happening.

If you think Clemson's SOS is weak you should take a look at the 47 teams OU beat. I have. Only 8 of the 47 won 7 or more games. THIRTY ONE of them had non-winning records. The streak began after a tie to 1953 Pittsburgh (3-5-1) and ended with a loss to 1957 Notre Dame (7-3). In Norman to a ND team coming off a 6-34 loss at Michigan State.

Yeah...47 will be tough to get to...
@ 15
Run table on 2019...be 30
Would have to do again in 2020...
I agree no...way

Reverting back to the days when FSU first joined.

Letting the big east fill slots in the ACC really hasn't done anything for their football profile either. It's kinda ironic because the ACC really didn't need any help to elevate their basketball recognition to start with. I thought Miami and Pitt out of the big east would be the historic football power they were lacking. Just hasn't happened at all.

Bobby Bowden was no dummy when it came time to go get in a conference either. ACC was a "sisters of the poor" football conference and it still holds true today with Clemson being the bully.
