Not many programs have the prestige and mystique enough to be able to say that the 2 greatest coaches in this history of college football coached at your school.

Damn. Think about that for a second.

Out of the teams we've watched from afar, who fits the bill he's just described?

I'll submit USC for one with McKay, and Carroll (with John Robinson getting honorable mention...hell, with a NC and multiple conference titles he likely deserves to be mentioned with both of those guys.)

I'll vote against one in Texas where Darrell Royal is the lone banner carrier.

I'll toss in two:

Notre Dame with Rockne and Leahy, of course, and it pains me to write it but Parseghian did get two NC, both at Bama's expense.

Ohio State has Hayes and Meyer (perhaps the only challenger to Saban's claim as the best coach of his era). It's true Meyer has managed just one NC at OSU, but he had two at Florida as well.

Jim Tressel was a pretty good coach for the suckeyes as well.

Bcs: 1 × national title and 6 x Conference Champs

Wasn't too shabby at Youngstown State either having won 4 x national titles

Wilkinson should be included for OU as well with 14 Big8 titles and 3 national championships. 18 years at OU with .826 win percentage.

But, reaching back to that Era brings in Wallace Wade and Frank Thomas and really solidifies the argument for Bama IMO.

Although, to he fair, the stats are really close for Bud, Barry, and Bob. Bob is just missing a couple titles and he is coaching in an Era of greater parity.

When I think of greatest coaches of all time, I think of those with at least two NC, even at different schools. Although Spurrier accomplished great things by putting FL football on the map, he succeeded once in the NC arena. Same for Stoops. Same for Stallings as well. All beloved by their respective fan bases, but they fall short, in my view, as greatest of all time.

Have you ever looked at the teams that record came against? Less than half of those teams had a winning record, only three had eight or more wins on the season. The rest came against your garden variety six and seven win teams.

Great run, no doubt. I think it does deserve at least a small asterisk.

These are the teams that had winning records (.500+) on the season during that 47 game streak.

Schnell put Miami on the map with his NC in the mid-80's. IF it wasn't for Schnell, do they even look at a guy like Johnson? Or, more importantly, does Johnson even look at Miami if he hadn't seen what Schnell had been able to accomplish?

I know this is off topic but Miami was about to drop football. This was in the late '70. I think Coach Bryant help them in the hire of coach Schnell to help keep the football program going.
