Saban has signed a new contract extension. Yes. Check.
Saban has told ESPN he isn't going anywhere. Yes. Check.

However, things have changed drastically in the past 24 hours.

Here is a timeline of the past 24 hrs.

  • FRIDAY -
  • - Texas AD Steve Patterson gives his support to Mack Brown to stay at Texas for years to come
  • - Alabama HC Nick Saban purportedly signs extension to stay at Alabama
  • - Texas fans on every Longhorn Forum on the internet in huge meltdown of epic proportions
  • - Everybody in Alabama breathes a huge sigh of relief knowing Saban is safe at Alabama
  • ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
  • SATURDAY -
  • - Texas HC Mack Brown informs team that he is retiring
  • - ESPN confirms report of Mack Brown retiring
  • - Texas Longhorn Forums in huge rollercoaster of emotions, now happy of Mack retiring
  • - some Texas fans saying Nick Saban back in play for Texas

Here's the scene in Austin. Since the announcement of Mack's retirement, the local news on TV and radio are in a tizzy. They just showed people running to the stadium screaming and appearing very happy. This news is corresponding with Final Exam period for University of Texas students. People on the street are being interviewed by local TV and radio shows are blowing up the caller lines with many saying that Saban is back in play for Texas.

Please don't shoot the messenger. I'm just reporting what its like. The word on the street in Austin is that the fans still want Nick Saban, but are just happy to have Mack gone. I have no idea if Saban truly is back in play for Texas or not. Maybe he is. I hope so. Just don't be mad if Texas now makes a huge push for Saban. This may shape up into a massive bidding war.

Jesus Christ you are delusional. You're not "reporting" anything other than delusional message board chatter from fellow delusional people. Everyone that knows absolutely ANYTHING, actual ppl that either know Saban or real sources have said the entire time he wasnt going anywhere let alone now. Move the hell on bro.

Hey guys. Don't shoot the messenger. I'm just reporting how the people feel in Austin. If you don't believe me, just check any one of our Longhorn forums. I've actually said that I don't know if Saban is truly back in play for Texas or not. I really don't know. People have been emailing me as if I know something. If I did, I would just say so. I don't though. I'm just speculating that Saban might be back in play for Texas. That's all. I mean, I'm not hiding my true feelings or allegiances on this. If Saban is indeed back in play for Texas, then I won't lie. I'd be extremely happy.

All I was doing is telling you guys what the scene is like in Austin. People still want Saban. Mostly, we are just happy to be rid of Mack. And we'll be happy to have another coach not named Saban. Who knows? I'll keep my ear to the ground and maybe something will be reported in a few days to see if Saban is still to be pursued by Texas or not.

Jesus Christ... Texas fans are becoming more annoying than Auburn with this "I can buy whatever I want" crap. Too bad yall couldnt "buy" a QB that wasn't soft as charmin ultra soft back in '09 huh?

I liked his line in another thread about having great football at Texas for 100 years. Bama, ND, even USC could probably claim great football , hell even Chokelahoma. Texas could claim really good football.

How can Oklahoma claim great football, but not Texas. Yes, I understand in recent years OU and Bob Stoops has owned Texas and Mack Brown, but if we are talking the last 100 years or so then it would be remiss not to know that Texas has owned OU over that time period. I think the series is like 60-40 in favor of Texas. Anyway, I don't even care about all those wins before my time. And yes, I'm already pretty old so, as a sports fan, I really only care about what has been going on lately.

Maybe this is just me, but I think it would show a lack of dignity on the part of the Texas program to attempt to initiate a "bidding war" by shoving a gazillion dollars in Saban's face. I also think it would show an equal lack of dignity on the part of the Alabama program to respond by taking part.

If the Longhorns want to appear like those circus clowns on "Storage Wars" over a man who is, last time I checked, NOT Jesus Christ Son of God, more power to them...but I'd be ashamed if I was a Texas fan. And as much as I've been proud all these years to have Nick Saban as the Crimson Tide coach, as much I've wallowed in the success he's brought our program, if he DID decide to play that kind of game, then quite frankly I'd feel the time had come to let him go and move on. I wouldn't care for what it said about him. A raise is one thing, everybody wants a raise right? Sure they do. But there's always a limit in any situation, and this one has a limit for me.

Just my one cent. Roll Tide, no matter who our coach is, winning or losing: Roll Tide.

You have really lost all credibility regarding any rational posts you have made....please, for the love of all things good, please get off this subject.

Jimmy Sexton is probably the best agent around

As much as people love Nick Saban in Alabama, there is always the agent that makes things happen. And that agent is Jimmy Sexton. He's the one that made this happen for Alabama. And if I am not mistaken, he's the one who got the deal to bring Saban to Alabama from Miami. That was a huge coup. However, as much as he is probably a big Alabama fan, his best interests lie with his client, Nick Saban.

Sexton was able to leverage the desire of Texas to get Saban into a new contract extension for Nick Saban. $7 million per year is a lot of money and certainly nothing anyone, even Texas fans, would turn their nose up at. That money is most definitely well-deserved by the man many consider to be the greatest current coach in college football, and one of the greatest all-time.

I can appreciate this line of thinking. A man should be respected for his loyalty to his wife, family, friends, boss, company, etc. And on the corollary, a company should reward its employees for their loyalty. What happens when another company thinks the world of someone and really admires how they do their work? This is the situation that we find ourselves in.

Let's be real here. College football has become a business. Revenues generated far exceed that of even 20 years ago. The players don't get paid, so the bosses line their pockets with even MORE money. That money gets trickled down to those that do get paid. Like the coaches. Now, none of the NCAA college coaches, that I know of, are full-time employees as in a full-time job. No. Coaching jobs are all based on yearly and multi-yearly contracts. It would be naive to think that such an environment fosters much loyalty at all, especially when coaches know that they could be moving on in the next year or two. It's an inherently very unstable work environment.

Saban is a fantastic coach. You guys seem to like him very, very much. It's hard to want something so bad that someone else has. It's like fighting over women. Sometimes it's worth it. Sometimes it isn't. Here, we are fighting for a head coach that probably every team in the NCAA would love to have. However, there's probably only a few that have the resources to be able to do this. It's too bad. I definitely can understand the point of Alabama fans not to lose their beloved coach.
