🏈 Running back Xavier Marks, brother Torin to join Alabama football program

Brothers Xavian Marks and Torin Marks will join the Alabama football program, their father Clyde told AL.com on Tuesday.

Clyde Marks said that Xavian, a 5-foot-8, 155-pound running back from Rosenberg, Texas, will be on football scholarship and will have a chance to run track. Torin, a 5-foot-11, 170-pound defensive back and wide receiver, will be a walk-on.

Both graduated this year from George Ranch High School and both were three-star recruits. Torin is a year older as Xavian had a late birthday for his class.

"He's coming on a scholarship and as of right now, it's football, but I'm sure he probably will run track," Clyde said of Xavian. "He's a 10.3 (second) 100 (meter dash) kid. If they give him the opportunity to run, he probably will run track also."

Both players were committed to New Mexico State in January, but did not sign. Xavian signed with Alabama on Tuesday, Clyde Marks said.

"We were already in ties with Alabama," Clyde Marks said. "We had other schools that we were in contact with. That's kind of how it happened. We had 'Bama, we had LSU, we had Arkansas and there were other schools. It was pretty much a decision that came to the end and they liked the school."

Xavian Markrs ran for 1,523 yards and 18 touchdowns as a senior. Alabama was searching for more depth at a thin running back position and appears to have it with Xavian Marks.

Wikipedia lists Palmer at 5'8" 172. I'm wondering if that was his NFL playing weight?

I do remember someone commenting at some point during Palmer's Bama tenure that he benched over 300. Pretty stout. More than 6'5" 235 pound Coker who's a pretty strong young man benching 255.

Weighing 235 and benching 255 is weak. I weighed 125 pounds when u graduated high school and I maxed out at 275. I just can't understand these guys that can barely lift their own weight. It honestly doesn't take much to get built up, especially at a D-1 program with all the facilities, training, and supplements they offer.

I think Coker was listed as the strongest of the Bama QBs, so...

I think I'd rather have a guy that can throw the ball 80 yards than one that can bench though.

Guys that are 5'8 have short arms and don't have very far to push or steady that weight. I am 6'4" and spent 4 years in the Navy working out practically every day. I could do 100 consecutive dips, 100 straight push ups, could two hand curl 135 as many times as you wanted, could leg press all the machine would hold but struggled to push up 255 more than once.

All I am saying is that long arms make the bench press more difficult. So 255 isn't weak for a guy with and almost 6 foot 10" wingspan. He may have a weakness with decision making, but athleticism and having the tools to be great isn't his issue.

I remember no less than former Cowboy figure Gil Brandt discussing this issue when Andre Smith's bench press prowess, or lack thereof came up. Basically, the longer your arms, the tougher a lift the bench press becomes.

I agree with that, but I know when I played I wanted to be strong, because I had to be. I know quarterbacks are like pitchers and having to hit, it doesn't always belong. It was more of a comment on side by side comparison of numbers.

I totally understand that and noticed that during my days in the weight room with the tall guys. While I would never question your strength as you are showing you were powerful with other exercises, I am willing to bet Coker isn't even remotely matching your numbers on the dips and such. Muscle probably gets in the way of throwing motion, but AJ McCarron stated he benched over 300 pounds, Brady Quinn was always ripped, and we have plenty of other guys that tall and between 215 and 250 in weight throwing up way more than 255. Once again I know quarterbacks aren't supposed to be known for their strength, but damn, figured they could easily do their weight as any man truly should, especially if you're in D-1 shape. Not a knock, just more of an observation and surprise.
