If any NFL quarterback knows about getting hit, it's Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger (Miami (Ohio)).
Coming into the season, Roethlisberger had been sacked 386 times on his career, which is the 13th most in NFL history and the most among active NFL quarterbacks. His per-season average of 38.6 is the second highest in NFL history.
So when Roethlisberger says you hit him hard, you know it says something.
Baltimore Ravens linebacker Courtney Upshaw's (Alabama) hit on Roethlisberger during last Thursday night's game was so hard that Roethlisberger called it the second hardest hit he's ever taken.
"This is easily right there with a close second," Roethlisberger said on 93.7 The Fan in Pittsburgh. "I lost my breath instantly and remember hitting the ground thinking, 'Boy, that hurt a lot.' I kind of pride myself on not taking those big hits, but I sure as heck didn't see it coming."
The only time Roethlisberger says he was hit harder was by Ravens linebacker Bart Scott (Southern Illinois) in 2006. Compare the two hits below:

Courtney Upshaw:
Roethlisberger says he is still feeling the effects of the game a few days later.
"I'm hurting today as much as I was at any point I can think of in the last year," he said.
