šŸˆ Respect

I hesitated on responding to this last night. Well, let me rephrase that. I replied, but then decided not to post it.

Now, almost 12 hours later, I'm going to voice my thoughts.

"Earned respect?" No. By no means at all.

The Vols played a decent ball game. They faced a team coming off of seven weeks of back-to-back games. It was a tired Bama team.

That point made this game more balanced than I thought it would be. The off week came at a very opportune time for the Vols. It negated the depth advantage—to a degree.

One game does nothing to change my mind about the Tennessee program. I don't like Tennessee, I never have.

But, when guys like Johnny Majors roamed the sidelines I knew that while I didn't like the Vols, I maintained respect for the people. That's been gone a decade now.

I've appreciated your participation on this forum—encouraged it. 60 minutes of play from the Vols yesterday deserves a hand shake, an acknowledgment of a good game played.

Respect? No.

Respect? No as well, by most every standard.
UT is not a team that has represented themselves or the SEC in a cassy manner nor a team that has put together an impressive season on the field.

The tip of the hat that I give to the Vols is that they took what they had (i.e. solid talent, momentum coming off the UGA win, and two weeks to prepare) and put the best game that they could. All that effort during that narrow those three-hour window is respectable. Arkansas @ Florida comes to mind, yet the Hogs lost and Florida are still #1.

This is a long way from being a team or program that I respect. It is even further from a program that I fear or am worried about...even next year Coach Kiffin.

UT has a hot hand right now, which says nothing about the sum total of the team. Ole Miss finished as the hottest team in the country last year, but was not the best. Bama finished winless in the post season, but was still a Top 10 team. Its just being hot right now.

By the same measure Bama is not hot right now, which underscores that this game is likely not the best measuring stick for either team. Bama's Offensive non-hotness (just invented that word) is most closely linked to McElroy not playing well for the last several weeks, which is not UT's doing. Further complicating this snapshot of comparison is uncharacteristically poor playcalling by our OC. A point publically noted via sideline footage of Saban confronting MacElwain.

In summary, UT is not impressive, but opportunistic...and still short.

We earned it today.....................Good game guys .The cigar goes to you this year.

I understand how badly you want your team to be respected, OA, and as a regular rival poster on this board, you have already earned it yourself and have been a favorite rival member here for awhile.

However, one truly earns respect when one doesn't have to remind the other person of it.

And yes, we witnessed another memorable game in a much storied rivalry. I tip my cap to the Vols.
