He did a good job when he was here and I've never questioned whether or not he's a good DC. When he was fired at Clemson it was my impression that Dabo was using him as a scape goat for the embarrassment they suffered in their bowl game.
Good guy. Good recruiter. And a good DC. However, with as little emphasis as Petrino puts on defense and as heavy of a chain as he puts on his defensive staff by not allowing them to develop their players I don't see this as a hire that'll stick.
Terry, could you please explain the heavy chain on the defense comment? I can understand an offensive minded coach not paying any attention to the defense, and maybe not helping it to grow, but what does he do to prevent them from developing?

He put a restriction on his defensive players and coaches in practices.
We use a "thud" rule a lot. Wrap up, but don't take to the ground.
His defensive players were practically forbidden to hit in practice. It's one of the main reasons you saw poor tackling, poor assignment control, etc. with the Arkansas defenses when he was there.
ah, ok, thanks for the clarification. Anything to protect his offense, I guess. I don't understand why anyone has the idea of outscoring the other team if their defense can't stop them. all you have to do is run into a team with even a little defense and average offense to beat you every now and again.
