šŸˆ Report: Former Chicago Bears Dc Mel Tucker Is New Tide Secondary Coach

Leave it to Nick Saban to continue making moves and improving his staff, despite losing two good coaches and recruiters in Kevin Steele and Lance Thompson.

According to SI.com, Alabama has hired former Chicago Bears DC Mel Tucker as its new secondary coach. Tucker has coached in the NFL since 2005, serving as a defensive coordinator since 2008. Tucker last coached the defensive backs under Nick Saban at LSU in 2000.

Alabama’s weakest aspect of its defense continues to be the defensive secondary, and Tucker is the best hire NicK Saban could have made. While the Crimson Tide’s defense has been elite, the secondary has lacked great corner play.

The Crimson Tide will look for Tucker to help improve the weakness.

With the hire of Tucker, Alabama has filled its last on-field coaching vacancy.

Let's see what the guy's got. Can't be much worse than we were, so here's to looking at a bright future.
Say he's a "stop gap" hire. Say he's "here for a year." I get it.

"Let's see what he's got?" As of just a few hours ago it was, "he got no job."

"Look what fell into our lap" is my reaction. Strong resume. Remember what he'll be coaching. Reminds me of the Pendry hire in a way. Bobby Burton type of coaching style/personality is what I understand.

In my opinion, it looks to be a great hire as Saban always makes. He's got a great NFL background, so he obviously has the knowledge about the nuances of the heavy passing game, and we obviously need to rehab and make a change into the dynamic of the deep-seven which was a flaw last season.

I know nothing about the guy. Just because he was in the NFL doesn't make him a "sure thing", but it does offer some experience. Maybe he will be good and stay a few years. Having that NFL experience may persuade some future defensive back recruits. Wish he was here in time to talk Iman Marshall into looking more at us. We'll see though.

That's throwing a curveball. Is that coming from stories about Rico and Custis? You've been looking at cornerback numbers in this class? Ya know, even if he'd been on the staff a month ago I doubt we'd have put two different guys—Kiffin and Smart—on Marshall.

To me, if feels a lot like the way James Willis was hired. There's a late opening, a guy is looking for a job that has all the credentials needed.

Now, based on what I've learned about the guy it looks like a perfect "look what's fallen into our lap" moment. The point he was in the NFL in the positions he held makes him a damn strong bet. The time he spent as a co-DC and defensive backs coach in college almost makes it cheating. When you add his time as a GA, then DB coach under Saban to the mix? Playing with five aces...

Seriously. Most of his time will be spent working with the safeties and then shared duty with the corners. Over-qualified, is another way to look at him being here.

We got pretty damn lucky, I'd say.

I'm pleased with the hire. I know CKS is pleased as well. As a DC, you want to spend more time with the guys that will be doing the communicating of the defense on the field. Much like an OC that is a QB coach. You don't want the Oline coach calling the plays to be honest! "Fall in our lap" or not, the guy has spent time at the highest level of football. While his time as a DC with the Bears wasn't great, sometimes these guys aren't meant to be coordinators.

Nailed it.

I'm looking forward to seeing the development of the DB's going forward.

Glad to hear that.

As far as Marshall goes, it does sound like a weird recruting story where he didn't know he had an offer, we said he did, bla bla bla. So you're probably right in that nothing would have changed in regards to who we sent after him.

I didn't pay a lot of attention to him this year. Cali kid, offer from USC,...2 + 2 kind of recruiting story in my eyes. It's six of one, half of a dozen of another with Sheffield and Marshall. Add Minkah in and we're pretty solid with corners even if Rico and Custis move on.

I have to agree. I transcribe every single word up there.
