Florida's Spikes suspended for gouging eyes
By MARK LONG (AP) – 14 minutes ago
GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Florida coach Urban Meyer has suspended Brandon Spikes for the first half of Saturday's game against Vanderbilt after the star linebacker attempted to gouge the eyes of Georgia running back Washaun Ealey in a 41-17 victory.
Meyer says Spikes was retaliating after getting his eye poked earlier in the game.
Spikes is fourth on the team with 42 tackles and has three sacks.
He decided to return for his senior season instead of entering the NFL draft. The team's defensive captain has missed most of two games this season with an injured groin. He played only a series against Arkansas and sat out the entire game at Mississippi State on Oct. 24.

I understand what kind of game football is. I understand that things like this go on all the time. But when one is caught, ON FILM, blatantly doing what he did and ONLY gets a half game suspension against Vandy. The punishment really doesn't matter, it is less than a slap on the wrist, punishment in name only really. This is the type of thing (injury) that would not only end someones career, but impact their everyday life.

Yes, my opinion would be the same if it was one of the good guys as well.

Retaliation? Are you serious UM? Someone please explain to me how this is retaliation when the Spike kid has a visor/shield and there isn't enough room for more than putting your mouthpiece in to actually get a hand in there to get poked in the eye!! Damn !! I teach 600+ kindergarten thru second graders in PE and they have better excuses.

:rofl::rofl::rofl:

Oh wait, you might have been serious. If Richt makes a huge stink about it, they just might. Other than that...

The reason I think the SEC ups the ante is that the conference has had a lot of dirty laundry made public in the last few weeks regarding officiating. This has made a pretty big splash nationally thanks to Barnhart and ESPN, so if all he gets is a half the SEC really looks bad.

Wow now that justice. Our whole offensive line missed what 3 or 4 games over some text books and this button head tried rips someone's eyes out so they could never use text books again. Hopefully this will draw enough attention for the SEC to respond. Maybe next time it will be Tebow's eyes he goes for. Just saying.

If that had happened to Saint Tebow, CUM would be screaming to have the culprit suspended for the rest of the season and potential Bowl game. The Oregon kid punched a Boise State kid and he got gone for the whole season.

This "punishment" is truly a joke, and what a classless thing to do to try to excuse it as retaliation.

Here's what the SEC has to say:

The SEC has accepted Florida's suspension of linebacker Brandon Spikes for the first half of Saturday's game against Vanderbilt and will not add to it.

Spikes was caught on video attempting to gouge the eyes of Georgia running back Washaun Ealey in a pile during last week's game in Jacksonville.

Here is the SEC's statement on the matter:
"The Southeastern Conference has reviewed and accepted the disciplinary actions taken by the University of Florida regarding football student-athlete Brandon Spikes. The university suspended Spikes for the first half of its next game (vs. Vanderbilt, Nov. 7) for an unsportsmanlike act during the Gators' last game (vs. Georgia, Oct. 31)."
