Forty-eight years ago today, tragedy struck the world of rock ’n’ roll. On October 20, 1977, the plane carrying members of Lynyrd Skynyrd went down in a wooded area near Gillsburg, Mississippi — just three days after the release of their album Street Survivors.
The crash claimed the lives of Ronnie Van Zant, Steve Gaines, Cassie Gaines, assistant road manager Dean Kilpatrick, and the two pilots. Miraculously, several others survived, forever carrying the weight of that day.
Lynyrd Skynyrd had already become an American rock institution — “Sweet Home Alabama,” “Gimme Three Steps,” and “Free Bird” had made them household names. Their mix of Southern pride, blues roots, and raw honesty spoke to millions, and it still does today.
Though that plane crash silenced some of rock’s brightest voices, the spirit of Lynyrd Skynyrd has never faded. The songs, the stories, and the legacy live on — reminding us all that music, when it comes from the heart, never truly dies.
